Chen secures automatic berth into NCAA Regionals
HARDEEVILLE, S.C.– St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen captured the individual crown at the BIG EAST Championships presented by JEEP on Monday afternoon.
After going 3-over on the first two of the day and plummeting down the leaderboard, Chen was incredibly resilient going bogey-free for the final 16 holes while knocking in three birdies. The junior climbed back to even par for the day. After coming into the final round tied for first, the Johnnie took the lead after tallying a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole. With the runner-up finisher in the clubhouse trailing by one, Chen recorded seven straight pars to hold onto the one stroke advantage and etch his name in the history books. He finished the tournament at 2-under, 214.
"I gave it everything I had today to fight for the title," said Chen. "It's an honor to be apart of this program and I can't put into words how much I love this team and Coach Wildermuth."
The Beijing, China native has punched his ticket to the NCAA Regionals and will learn his fate on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. The NCAA Men's Golf Division I Championships Selection Show will air on the Golf Channel.
The junior becomes the ninth player in program history to win medalist honors at the conference tournament. In just two years at the helm in Queens, Head Coach Phil Wildermuth has mentored back-to-back BIG EAST Individual Champions. Last season, Jack Simontook home medalist honors after winning in a one-hole playoff. The duo becomes the first pair from St. John's to win medalist honors in consecutive years since Ryan McCormick and Dylan Crowley in 2014-15, respectively.
In the month of April, the team captain has been firing on all cylinders. Chen finished runner-up at the Southern Invitational, checked in top-5 at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at Ohio State and now adds a conference tournament title to his decorated resume.
The 2023 All-BIG EAST selection registered 12 birdies and 33 pars over the 54-hole tournament in Hardeeville, S.C. He excelled on the par-5's logging a 4.67 stroke average, which ranked second best amongst the field.
As a team, the Red Storm finished in 10th place with a combined score of 36-over, 900. Ryan Rittberger, Erik Stevens and Jack Breutsch tallied a 4-over, 76, during Monday's final round.
Chen will now look ahead to competing against the top collegiate golfers in the country at NCAA Regionals on May 13-15.
