The Red Storm has won six matches in a row
The No. 75 St. John's men's tennis team defeated Queens, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at the St. John's Outdoor Courts
The Red Storm (18-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) swept doubles competition to take the team point and won four singles matches to finish off its sixth straight victory.
Martin Bugaj and Armando Sotelo kicked things off in doubles play for the Johnnies, taking down Omar El Shehawey and Lucas Foix Sotos, 6-4, on the No. 2 court. Bugaj and Sotelo are a perfect 7-0 as a pair this season, with six of those wins coming from the second doubles position.
The Red Storm clinched the team point when Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda picked up their eighth straight victory together, triumphing over Tim Andersson and Francisco Gonzalez, 7-6 (7-4).
Kaneda started singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Francisco Gonzalez on the No. 5 court. Kaneda is 16-2 this season and has won his last six contests. Bugaj made it 3-0 Red Storm on the No. 1 court, taking down Roni Rikkonen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The lead was pushed to four when Carl Gustavsson triumphed over Tim Andersson, 6-4, 6-3, for his 14th singles win this season. Gustavsson has won three straight matches and has five victories on the No. 2 court.
After two Queens victories on the No. 3 and No. 4 courts, BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Armando Sotelo finished things off for the Johnnies with a 6-4, 6-2 win on the No. 6 court over Noah Gauthier. The freshman has won his last six contests and is 8-1 over the Red Storm's last six matches.
With the victory, St. John's improves to 4-0 all-time against their crosstown foes.
The Red Storm will wrap up its regular season slate with a BIG EAST matchup with Georgetown on April 10 in Washington, D.C.
