The Red Storm bullpen allowed no runs on three hits with five strikeouts
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 17, 2024) – The St. John's baseball team (34-15-1, 14-6) secured the No. 2 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament following a 6-4 victory over Georgetown (33-19, 12-7) on Friday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Johnnies will square off with the third-seeded Hoyas in the opening game of next week's conference tournament. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. from Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. The Red Storm's second-place conference finish is the highest since 2018 when the team secured its ninth conference regular-season title. The Red Storm will enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the second seed for the 10th time in program history, marking its first since 2017.
St. John's relievers AJ Lausten, Ben Adams, Tim Cunningham and Jed Boyle shut down the Hoyas, allowing just three hits over 4.1 innings of work. The foursome rattled off five strikeouts and induced a pair of double plays in the contest.
Eight of the Red Storm's nine batters registered one hit in Friday's contest. Right fielder Ben Beauchamp registered two tallies in the victory while first baseman Marty Higgins knocked in two runs of his own.
Much like Thursday's contest, St. John's starter Evan Chaffee and Georgetown starter Andrew Williams held the opposition scoreless through the early going.
The Hoyas broke through in the third inning with a solo homer from Andrew Bergeron and an RBI single by Jake Hyde to take a 2-0 lead.
The Red Storm quickly responded in the home half of the frame with two runs of their own. The Johnnies loaded the bases on back-to-back singles from Anthony Brienza and Garrett Scavelli before Beauchamp was hit by a pitch. Blake Mayberry drove in a run on a fielder's choice to the right side while seeing Georgetown make a throwing error at second base and allowing Scavelli to score for a 2-2 deadlock.
St. John's took its first lead of the weekend with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Paul Orbon slapped a one-out double down the right-field line before Luke Orbon walked in the ensuing at-bat. After a flyout to right moved the elder Orbon over to third, the two brothers executed a double steal and took a 3-2 edge.
Georgetown responded in the top of the fifth with back-to-back solo homers, reclaiming a 4-3 advantage.
The Hoyas' lead was shortlived as the Johnnies quickly countered with a one-run bottom of the fifth. Following walks to Beauchamp and Jimmy Keenan, Higgins rocked an RBI single into the left-field corner and knotted the game at four.
The Johnnies found themselves in trouble in the sixth, loading the bases on three consecutive walks. Reliever Ben Adams came on and forced Christian Ficca, the conference's RBI leader, to fly out to center, staving off Georgetown's threat.
The Red Storm continued to pester the Hoyas in the seventh following a leadoff single by Beauchamp. Mayberry laced a single into right-center on a hit-and-run attempt, moving Beauchamp over to third. After the Johnnies' third baseman advanced to second on a wild pitch, Keenan roped a sacrifice fly to center to knock one run across. On the next pitch, Higgins smacked a hot shot to third, scoring Mayberry from the same bag on a groundout and going up two, 6-4.
Adams worked himself into a slight jam in the seventh, logging an error of his own before inducing a 3-6-3 double play to clear the bases. Cunningham came on for his 98th appearance with the Red Storm after a two-out single from Kavi Caster. The submariner struck out Marco Castillo on three pitches to end the frame.
The Hoyas battled Cunningham in the eighth, getting a one-out triple from Michael Eze and plunking Owen Carapellotti two pitches later. The Davie, Fla., product settled down and forced Josh Rolling to ground into a 5-4-3 twin-killing, preserving the two-run edge. Cunningham picked up his first win of the season, tossing 1.1 innings of work on Saturday.
Boyle, who entered the game with a 0.00 ERA at Jack Kaiser Stadium this season, came on in the ninth inning and plowed through the Hoya lineup. The righty struck out two of the three batters he faced, hurling just nine pitches to close out the two-run victory.
The Johnnies will conclude the 2024 regular season against Georgetown on Saturday. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
