QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team will continue its road swing on Wednesday night when it faces Yale at Reese Stadium.
The contest from New Haven is set to begin at 7 p.m. Justin Gallanty and Christine Huber will have the call on ESPN+.
Last time out on Thursday night, the Red Storm salvaged a draw at Towson, 1-1, at Tiger Field. Athina Sofroniou netted the equalizer in the 80th minute. The senior defender launched a laser of a free kick from 20 yards out into the top of the net to knot the score with just over 10 minutes to play.
The Red Storm dominated the Tigers in the shot count, 16-6. For the second-straight game, the Johnnies logged 10 shots on target. The squad is averaging 10.0 shots on target per game through the first two contests, which ranks 21st nationally.
Sofroniou joins Jordyn Levy and Lauryn Tran as the Johnnies' goal scorers this season. The duo added tallies in the season-opening victory against Colgate on Aug. 18.
The Red Storm have been efficient in creating attacking opportunities in the early going, averaging 17.5 shot attempts per game. In the season opener, the squad fired 19 shots, the highest mark since Aug. 27, 2021, when it recorded 22 against Columbia. 12 different players have added to the shot category and freshman Madison Mariani leads the team with seven strikes.
Wednesday's meeting between the two programs marks the ninth all-time and the fourth in the last six years. St. John's holds a 4-3-1 advantage in the all-time series which dates back 25 years when the two schools met in the 1999 ECAC Postseason Tournament.
Last season, St. John's and Yale battled to a 2-2 draw at Belson Stadium on Sept. 14, 2023. Nicole Gordon provided the equalizer in the 54th minute to earn the tie.
Yale is set to host its home opener after beginning its season on Sunday after dropping its season opener at Hofstra on Sunday, 2-1.
The Bulldogs went 5-6-5 in 2023 under Head Coach Sarah Martinez and were picked sixth in the Ivy League Preseason poll. The team returns All-Ivy Second Team selection Ellie Rappole, who scored seven goals and added two assists (16 points) as a junior.
Yale is the first of three Ivy League opponents the Red Storm will face during its non-conference slate in 2024. St. John's will host Cornell on Sept. 12 and travel to Penn on Sept. 15.
After Wednesday's match, the Red Storm will return home to begin a four-match homestand beginning on Sunday when it welcomes Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m.
