Red Storm will begin a four-game homestand on Sunday against Saint Joseph’s
NEW HAVEN, Conn.– The St. John's women's soccer team fell to Yale on Wednesday night, 1-0.
The Bulldogs converted off a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes and that proved to be the difference in their home opener at Reese Stadium.
Jordyn Levy tied for the game-high with three shots on the evening. On the year, the forward is tied for the team lead with eight attempts.
Jailene DeJesus, Nora Basile, Emily Riggins and Madison Mariani also recorded shot attempts during the setback in Connecticut.
Yale (1-1-0) struck first off a corner in the ninth minute as Tina Telk headed home the ball in from Ellie Rappole, 1-0.
St. John's (1-1-1) generated a dangerous chance in the 21st minute. Riggins delivered a looping ball onto the feet of Lauryn Tran, who dished a centering pass setting up DeJesus for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper but the grounded strike bounced off the post.
DeJesus' look on goal jumpstarted the offense for the Johnnies as Levy unleashed a pair of off-target shots. The Red Storm tallied three strikes in just 3:43.
St. John's created another good look on goal as DeJesus won possession in the attacking third, the midfielder poked a ball through to Mariani but the ensuing shot drifted far of the right goalpost.
Riggins provided the final opportunity of the half challenging Yale goalkeeper Kyla Holmes to make her first save in the 36th minute.
Teik's header was the difference maker at the halftime break. St. John's led on shots, 6-5.
In the second half, St. John's applied pressure on the Yale backline but weren't able to generate any threatening chances.
Malene Nielsen ran off her line and made a sliding kick save to keep the defecit at one in the 63rd minute. The Louisville transfer finished with three saves on the night.
As the rain began to fall heavily in New Haven, Tran tried to weave her way towards the net before the swarming Bulldogs' defense as they cleared danger and were able to hold on for the closing minutes to preserve a 1-0 victory.
