Red Storm will compete on Bethpage Black for the first time in 28 years
QUEENS, N.Y.– For the first time in 28 years St. John's men's golf team will host the final round of its annual home tournament on the world-renowned Bethpage State Park Black Course.
The Doc Gimmler Red & Black will tee off on Monday with the first two rounds on the Bethpage Red Course beginning at 8 a.m. The final round will be played on the Black the following day starting at 9 a.m. Live results will be available throughout the tournament on Scoreboard Live by Clippd.
The Red Storm will return to Bethpage Black for the first time since 1996, where it held its annual home tournament for 24 years beginning in 1973. Since then, Bethpage Black has played host to the most prestigious professional tournaments in the world hosting three majors. The Long Island track became the first-ever public course to welcome a major at the 2002 U.S. Open. It held the U.S. Open again in 2009 and the PGA Championship in 2019.
Next year, Bethpage Black will play host to the 2025 Ryder Cup, the bi-annual competition between the United States and Europe on Sept. 23-28. St. John's alumnus Keegan Bradley was introduced as the U.S. Team captain in July and will lead the squad on familiar territory.
The Red Storm welcome 11 other schools to its home invitational. Columbia, Harvard, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, LIU, Lehigh, North Dakota State, Towson, UConn and Villanova will join St. John's at this year's tournament.
The Johnnies return 2024 BIG EAST Champion Peicheng Chen, who is set to embark on his senior season. The two-time All-BIG EAST selection has recorded a team-best 72.3 stroke average over the last two seasons and claimed medalist honors three times in that span. David Mlynek, Jack Breutsch, Doug Beney and Thomas Stafford round out the five returners for the Red & White.
Third-year Head Phil Wildermuth, who has mentored back-to-back BIG EAST Champions, brings in a talented class of four newcomers. Transfers Brandon Sperling (Concordia) and Tyler Clark (Fordham) along with rookies JoJo Dolezal and Frank Wu all arrived in Queens with impressive amateur pedigrees.
St. John's is looking for its first Doc Gimmler title since 2021. Columbia took home the crown in 2023 accumulating a team score of 29-under.
In 2013, St. John's renamed the event from The McLaughlin to The Doc Gimmler to honor former Red Storm student-athlete and golf coach Jack "Doc" Gimmler. Gimmler came to St. John's in 1945 and helped lead the baseball team to the school's first College World Series in 1949.
After graduating, Gimmler went on to become the head athletic trainer for St. John's before taking over as the head coach of the men's golf team and associate director of athletics.
Gimmler guided the men's golf program to its first-ever BIG EAST title in 1979 and led the Johnnies to nine conference championships in the first 11 years of the league's existence. Under Gimmler's direction, St. John's finished either first or second in the BIG EAST in all but one season between 1979 and 1990. The longtime coach led St. John's to 10 Metropolitan Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.
Gimmler passed away in 1996 but will forever be remembered for his impact on collegiate golf, collegiate athletics, and St. John's over his more than four decades of service.
