Peicheng Chen Tied for the Lead After Opening Day of the Doc Gimmler Red & Black

Red Storm shot 1-under as a team in the second round; sits in seventh
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2024)– The St. John's men's golf team concluded the first two rounds of the Doc Gimmler Red & Black on Monday as Peicheng Chen sits tied for first.
St. John's currently sits in seventh place after logging a 4-over, 569, at the Bethpage State Park Red Course. The Red Storm sit just 10 strokes off the day one leaders, Columbia, who tallied a 6-under. The Johnnies shined in the second round going 1-under par as a squad.
Chen picked off right where he left off as the defending BIG EAST Champion is the leader in the clubhouse through 36 holes with a 6-under, 134.
The senior started off hot with two birdies and three on the first six holes. On the par-5 16th hole, the Beijing native fired in his first eagle of the season and birdied the 17th. Chen closed out the opening 18 holes with a 5-under, 65, a tournament low.
In the second, the two-time All-BIG EAST selection started off strong once again with three birdies on the front nine. Chen registered his seventh birdie of the day on the 17th hole and went into the clubhouse knotted for the tournament lead with Columbia's Grant Lester.
Freshman Joseph Dolezal shined in the latter round of the day carding a 4-under, 66. The rookie tallied six birdies over his final 18 holes of the day, including four on a bogey-free back nine. The Old Westbury, N.Y., native birdied his final three holes of the day to move to 2-under, 142 and sits tied for 25th place on the leaderboard.
Tyler Clark had a steady St. John's debut at Bethpage Red turning in a 3-over, 143, through 36 holes. The Fordham transfer sits inside the top-30 tied for 29th place heading into Tuesday.
Tomorrow's final round will be played on the famed Bethpage Black Course, marking the first time in 28 years the Red Storm will compete on the prestigious track. Tee times will begin at 9 a.m. from Farmingdale.
