The Red Storm will look to win its third-straight Indoor Metropolitan Championship Title
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a successful weekend at the Dr. Sander Scorcher, the St. John's track & field team will gear up for the annual Indoor Metropolitan Championships on Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. The regional meet is set to kick off at 10 a.m.
The Red Storm has historically dominated at the Indoor Metropolitan Championships, coming in second or better every year since 2010. The Johnnies will look to claim their third-straight Metropolitan Championship title on Friday.
Last season, St. John's took home the title, tallying eight wins and 15 top-three finishes for 199 total points. The squad beat out second-place Fordham by a whopping 55.5 points.
The Red Storm enjoyed a successful weekend at Colombia's Dr. Sander Scorcher at the Armory in Manhattan last week. As a team, the Red Storm registered a win in the weight throw and earned four top-five finishes.
Jamora Alves shined, being named the BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, after earning a gold medal and two personal-best throws at the Armory. In the weight throw, the Grenada native posted a personal-best toss of 16.68 meters for first place in the event. She went on to produce a personal-record throw of 15.23 meters for third place in the shot put. The standout's shot put performance was the best in the BIG EAST last week.
The junior has earned first-place finishes in the shot put at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational and in the weight throw at the Dr. Sander Scorcher. Additionally, Alves has finished with a personal best in every event she has competed in, through the season's opening two meets.
Juliet Smith continued the success of the Red Storm throwers, setting a new personal record of 15.23 meters for fifth place in the weight throw. The sophomore has now logged a top-five finish in at least one event in both of the Johnnies' meets this season.
Chinenye Onuorah registered a 400-meter BIG EAST-leading finishing time of 55.58 seconds, last weekend. The junior's mark was good enough for seventh place at the Armory.
The Thailand product went on to earn a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay alongside Amarachukwu Obi, Nyla Henderson and Nora Haugen. In their first race together this season, the group paced the track in 3:42.62 for second place.
Following this weekend's regional championship, the Red Storm will return to Ocean Breeze for the Big Apple Classic on Feb. 8 in Staten Island, N.Y.
