St. John’s Surrenders Late-Game Run; Falls to DePaul, 67-60

Ber’Nyah Mayo scored a team-high 15 points
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team led for nearly 29 minutes on Tuesday night before surrendering a fourth quarter run to DePaul and ultimately falling, 67-60.
The Red Storm (10-5, 0-4 BIG EAST) led by seven after three quarters before DePaul (8-9, 3-1 BIG EAST) engineered a final frame comeback at Carnesecca Arena.
Ber'Nyah Mayo produced an efficient stat line finishing with a team-high 15 points. The graduate student shot 50 percent from the floor, 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and three assists.
Lashae Dwyer reached double-figures for the 10th-straight game and finished with 14 points. The senior added five steals, marking her sixth game this season with four swipes or more.
Kylie Lavelle tallied 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from field goal range. The junior hit a season-high two 3-pointers in Queens.
Freshman Janeya Grant made her collegiate debut on Tuesday night, record four minutes of action. Phoenix Gedeon pulled down a team-best six boards.
The Red Storm shot 81.8 percent from the free throw line marking the sixth time this season its shot over 80 percent from the charity stripe.
Lavelle hit a triple from the top of the key to start off the scoring. Jailah Donald nailed a stepback jumper as the Johnnies built an early advantage. On the final possession of the opening frame, Skye Owen got a floater to fall as the buzzer sounded to give the Red Storm a two-point edge, 15-13, after 10 minutes.
In the second stanza, three consecutive field goals, including back-to-back triples from Dwyer as a 10-2 run grew the Red Storm lead to seven, 25-18. Mayo swiped a pass away and found Dwyer on the other end for the easy finish. Mayo nailed a triple as the Johnnies tallied the final five points of the half and took a 34-28 advantage into the break. St. John's 8-for-13 (61.5%) from the field in the second quarter.
During the latter half, DePaul made a three-pointer start off the third and the game remained within a three-point margin for the next five minutes. The Red Storm opened its largest lead of the night after a steal turned into a fastbreak lay-in by Lavelle to cap off a 6-0 run and pushed the score to 48-39, forcing a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons tallied the final bucket of the frame as St. John's took a seven-point cushion, 48-41.
DePaul fought right back into spurring an 8-0 run to begin the final frame to take the lead for the time since the 9:15 mark in the second quarter. Gedeon ended the stretch with a mid-range jumper to halt the run and quickly retake control, 51-50. DePaul responded with a 6-0 spurt to put the Blue Demons up by five, 55-50 before Gedeon came up with a big play once again finishing an old fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to two. In the final minutes, Mayo knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a one possession game with 1:22 to play. The Blue Demons recorded seven straight points down the stretch to snap a three-game skid against St. John's.
St. John's will be back head to the Midwest for the first time this season when it travels to Xavier on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest at the Cintas Center.
