Wu becomes first St. John’s individual champion since Jessie Kweon on April 11, 2023
DELMAR, N.Y.- Kelly Wu captured medalist honors to lead the St. John's women's golf team to a runner-up finish at the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational on Monday.
Wu claimed the first individual title of her collegiate career and the first by a Johnnie since Jessie Kweon won the St. John's Invitational on April 11, 2023. The senior blew past the tournament field as the only player in the 80-golfer field to turn in a score under par logging a career-low, 4-under, 136, to win by five strokes.
The Red Storm slid up one spot after yesterday's opening round to log its best team tournament finish since it took the first place at the Spring Break Shootout in March. The Johnnies tallied the best second round team score shooting 21-over, 301, amidst rainy conditions ending just three strokes shy of the event champions, Boston University. St. John's finished the 36-hole tournament with a 36-over, 596, at Normanside Country Club.
Following a career-low 3-under, 67, on Sunday Wu became the only player at the event to go under par in both rounds carding a 1-under, 69, on Monday. The Auckland, New Zealand native posted a bogey-free final 16 holes and flushed three birdie putts to run away with medalist honors. She led the field with eight birdies.
Cathilyn Lee logged an eighth place finish, marking the best of her NCAA Division I career over the two days in the Capital Region. The senior registered a 10-over, 146, in Delmar. Pihla Pennanen recorded a 4-over, 74, on Monday to climb the leaderboard placing tied for 13th overall. Laura Mizleorva turned in her second consecutive top-20 finish checking in tied 16th overall after shooting a 16-over, 152, in Upstate New York.
The Johnnies will close the fall slate next weekend at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
