St. John’s Rallies From 16-Point Second Half Deficit to Sink Providence, 62-55

QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2025) – The St. John's Women's Basketball team (8-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) rallied from a 16-point deficit to pull out a 62-55 victory over Providence (6-4, 0-2 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon in Queens.
The Red Storm trailed by as many as 16 midway through the third quarter before mounting a furious comeback. Through the final 15:57 of the outing, the Johnnies outscored the Friars 36-13 and added 23 points in the final frame to earn its seventh consecutive home victory at Carnesecca Arena.
Brooke Moore led the team in scoring for the seventh time this season racking up a game-high 16 points and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The junior chipped in six rebounds and a block.
Shaulana Wagner filled the box score tallying 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals during Sunday's victory. Sa'Mya Wyatt was the third Johnnie to finish in double-digits in scoring logging 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The sophomore is shooting 61.8 percent (55-89) from the floor on the season, which leads the BIG EAST and ranks top-20 in NCAA Division I.
St. John's had a controlled 6-4 start to the contest before the Friars took over and put up 12 unanswered points for the 16-6 advantage. Beautiful Waheed brought the visitors run to a halt with a sweeping lay-up. After the opening quarter, Providence carried a double-digit advantage, 18-8.
The Red Storm rebounded from a slow start offensively, ripping off an 11-0 run to take its first lead since the 6:50 mark in the second quarter 19-18. The run was capped off by back-to-back triples from Janeya Grant and a powerful block on the defensive end by Waheed. The Friars regained momentum, swinging the advantage back in their favor for the 30-22 result at the end of the half.
Providence extended its lead, to as many as 16 42-26,with 6:27 remainingin the third quarter. The Red Storm responded with a 13-4 run, led by Jailah Donald, Moore and Waheed, to get within seven of the Friars entering the final 10 minutes of action, 46-39. Moore scored eight of her 16 points during the third frame.
The Johnnies rode their momentum into the final stanza rattling off an 11-0 run to start the frame and take its first lead of the second half, 47-46, with 6:31 left to play. After the two sides traded the lead, he duo of Wagner and Wyatt combined for 10 points in just two minutes to give St. John's a five-point edge, 59-54. The Red Storm shot 72.7 percent from the field in the final quarter to secure the 62-55 victory for the Johnnies.
St. John's will hit the road for a non-conference matchup at Stony Brook on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at Stony Brook Arena.
