St. John’s Continues BIG EAST Action against Providence on Sunday

Red Storm have won six-straight at home against the Friars
QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2025) – The St. John's Women's Basketball program (7-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) will continue BIG EAST play at Carnesecca Arena when it hosts Providence (6-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Sunday's matinee will be streamed on ESPN+ with Maria Marino and Edona Thaqi on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's will host a Youth Day as kids of all ages are encouraged to wear a jersey to the game to receive a discounted ticket. After the game, there will be a postgame autograph session with the entire team inside Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm will return to the hardwood after falling to Creighton in the BIG EAST opener on Thursday night, 60-52. The Johnnies setback snapped a six-game winning streak, dating back to Veterans Day.
The Red Storm outrebound Creighton, 34-30, inside Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies have won the battle on the glass in eight of their nine contests this season, including each of the last seven games.
Brooke Moore recorded her third double-double of the last four games adding 14 points and 11 boards against the Bluejays. The junior becomes the first St. John's player to tally three double-doubles in a four-game span since Danielle Patterson logged three straight from Nov. 28-Dec. 11, 2021. The Kennesaw, Ga., native is the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week and currently ranks top-five in the league in scoring averaging 15.6 points per contest.
The Red Storm have two players that sit atop the conference and rank top-20 nationally in field goal percentage in Moore and Sa'Mya Wyatt converting 60.5 percent of their attempts. Shaulana Wagner ranks top-15 in NCAA Division I dishing out 6.1 assists per outing.
Wyatt, the ASUN Freshman of the Year at Austin Peay last season has come into a zone in recent games. The Powder Springs, Ga., native has recorded 19.3 points on 68.3 percent shooting (26-41) and 5.3 rebounds per game over the last three contests.
St. John's and Providence will meet for the 83rd time on Sunday afternoon with the series dating back to Jan. 8, 1978. The Red Storm have won each of the last six meetings played in Queens, most recently a 62-55 triumph last season on Jan. 29, 2025. The Johnnies erased a 12-point second half deficit fueled by a 29-8 scoring run and a 17-point effort from Skye Owen. Under the direction of Joe Tartamella, St. John's holds an 11-2 record against the Friars at Carnesecca Arena.
The series between the two conference foes has been tight with seven of the last meetings being decided by single-digits, including two contests that went into overtime.
Providence will look to bounce back after dropping its BIG EAST opener at Xavier on Thursday afternoon, 61-47. The Friars will play just their second true road game this season and hold a 1-2 record away from the Ocean State.
Defensively, the Friars have been strong limiting their opponents to 53.2 points per game, which ranks first in the BIG EAST and 19th in NCAA Division I. Providence has held seven of its nine opponents to fewer than 65 and three to 40 or less.
Erin Batth's squad is guided offensively by three players averaging in double-figures- Sabou Gueye (15.0 PPG), Payton Dunbar (11.4 PPG) and Teneisia Brown (10.1 PPG). Gueye, a Florida A&M transfer ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring average heading into Sunday's contest.
Following Sunday's contest, St. John's will jump back into non-conference play where it holds a 7-1 record against out-of-league opponents this year. The Red Storm will make the short trip to Stony Brook for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
