Fencing to Compete at Carla-Mae Richards Invitational on Sunday

The Red Storm returns to action at Brandeis University
QUEENS, N.Y. — The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams will continue their 2025-26 campaigns when they travel to Waltham, Mass., to compete in the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational this Sunday at Brandeis University.

The men's team will get started at 9 a.m. against MIT in round one, followed by a matchup with Haverford at 10 a.m. in round two. The Johnnies will then face Brandeis at 11 a.m. before taking on Wheaton at 12 p.m. in round four. Round five will feature a meeting with Boston College at 1:30 p.m. ahead of a round-six bye before closing the day against Penn State in round seven at 3:30 p.m.
The women's squad begins at 9 a.m. against MIT in round one before facing Tufts at 10 a.m. in round two. After a matchup with Brandeis at 11 a.m. in round three, the Johnnies will take on Cornell at noon in round four. St. John's will then close out the event with Boston College in round five at 1:30 p.m. and Penn State in round seven at 3:30 p.m.
The Red Storm is coming off a strong showing at the LIU Shark Tank Challenge on Nov. 23 in Brooklyn. The Johnnies combined for a 6-2 record against LIU, NYU, Yale and Wagner behind standout performances in all three weapons. Vlad Covaliu led the men with an 11-1 mark in saber while Samuel Imrek went 10-2 in epee. Nicole Feygin powered the women's side with a perfect 12-0 day in epee, while Antonina Lachman and Malwina Kolodziejczyk each posted 10-2 records in foil to round out a balanced team effort.
St. John's enjoyed success in its previous stop at Brandeis in December 2024 when Darii Lukashenko and Daniil Mazur combined for a 31-2 record to lead the men's side while Lachman guided the women with a 17-1 mark. The Johnnies defeated Brandeis twice, MIT, Yale, Cornell and Boston College en route to a 6-6 overall finish at the event.
Head Coach Yury Gelman is in his 31st season at the helm of the St. John's fencing program. He has coached 140 All-Americans, 27 individual NCAA Champions and guided the Red Storm to the 2001 national title. In 2024-25, Gelman led the Red Storm to a top-seven national ranking for the 32nd consecutive season and coached Lukashenko to an individual national championship.
After competing at Brandeis, Gelman and the Red Storm break for the semester and resume competition in 2026 on Jan. 17 at the St. John's Super Cup in Queens.
