St. John’s Competes at Carla-Mae Richards Invitational

Women finish 4-2, men post 3-3 showing in Waltham
WALTHAM, Mass.—The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams wrapped up a full day of competition at the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational hosted by Brandeis University on Sunday in Waltham, Mass. The teams combined for a 7-5 overall record against MIT, Haverford, Brandeis, Wheaton, Tufts, Cornell, Boston College and Penn State. The Red Storm women finished the day at 4-2, while the men turned in a 3-3 showing.
Across both squads, St. John's controlled the strip in epee, combining for a 48-29 record as a program. The Red Storm totaled 93 individual bout wins at the invitational.
On the men's side, St. John's opened the day with a narrow loss to MIT before rebounding with victories over Haverford, Wheaton and Penn State. The Red Storm was strongest in epee and saber throughout the meet behind junior Daniil Mazur, who paced all men's fencers with a 15-2 overall record. Junior Adam Horvath added 11 wins, while junior Lars Ponikvar finished with nine.
In saber, junior Justin Cotterell-Roberts anchored the lineup with a 14-6 mark, while sophomore Daniel Lendvai contributed 12 victories. Freshman Sebastian Garcia led the foil group with a 12-6 performance followed closely by junior Igor Wozniak with 11 wins.
The women opened the invitational with four straight victories over MIT, Tufts, Brandeis and Cornell before closing the day against Boston College and Penn State. Seniors Antonina Lachman and Malwina Kolodziejczyk combined for 26 foil wins with each posting identical 13-5 records.
Junior Eva Galper led the epee squad with a team-high 14 victories while junior Elisa Treglia added 12. In saber, junior Catinca Dumitru delivered the strongest showing for St. John's, finishing the day at 11-2.
After competing at Brandeis, Head Coach Yury Gelman and the Red Storm break for the semester and resume competition in 2026 on Jan. 17 at the St. John's Super Cup in Queens.
