QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will host FDU on Friday afternoon before hitting the road to face UMass on Sunday. First serve against the Knights is set for 12:15 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center, while Sunday's contests at the Bay Road Outdoor Tennis Center in Amherst, Mass., is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
The Johnnies are 4-1 this season, most recently falling to Rutgers last Friday, 4-0, in its first road contest of the season. Alicia Gomez has led the Johnnies in her second year in Queens, winning seven total matches so far this season. Gomez has a team-best four singles triumphs and has won three matches in doubles play alongside Victoria Papadopoulou. Giulia Bizzari, Sandra Dzhambazov, Alexandra Nielsen and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde have each picked up a pair of victories in singles action.
Friday's contest against FDU will be the ninth meeting between the two programs, with the Red Storm winning the previous eight matchups. Last season, a pair of Sartz-Lunde victories propelled St. John's to a convincing 4-1 triumph over the Knights on Feb. 9 at USTA.
FDU arrives to Queens with an 0-2 dual-match record in 2025, most recently coming up short against NJIT, 5-2, last Sunday in Newark, N.J. Ann Kato, Valentina Silva and Yelena Kim each have one singles win this season, accounting for the Knights' only three triumphs in solo play through two contests.
Sunday will be the Red Storm's second trip to Amherst in 2024-25, previously competing in the UMass Fall Invitational this past September. The Minutewomen lead the all-time series, 6-3, but the Johnnies were victorious, 5-2, the last time the two programs squared off in dual match play, back on Feb. 16, 2020.
Like St. John's, UMass enters the weekend 4-1 in 2025. After dropping their first match of the season to Boston College, the Minutewomen have rattled off four straight wins, most recently sweeping Fairfield, 7-0, on Feb. 2. Before facing the Red Storm on Sunday, UMass will host Army on Saturday in Amherst.
The Minutewomen have dominated doubles play this season, earning a combined 13-1 record in partner action. Amelia Tye and Ella Faessler lead the squad with a 4-0 doubles record. In singles play, Tye, Faessler and Martina Pavissich each have four wins.
Following this weekend's contests, the Johnnies will return home to face Villanova on Feb. 21 for their first BIG EAST contest of the season. First serve from the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 12:15 p.m.
