St. John’s Falls to Hofstra in Overtime, 13-12

Brian Kelly tallied six points for the Red Storm in the loss
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team fell in overtime to Hofstra, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm (2-2) led 5-1 in the second quarter, but Hofstra rallied to send the game into overtime and won it in the extra session. The contest between the local rivals featured four lead changes and five ties. This is the second time the Pride and Johnnies have played into overtime in the last five meetings, also going to the extra session in the Red Storm's 19-18 victory in 2021.
Brian Kelly starred for St. John's, tallying four goals and two helpers. The senior leads the team with 22 points and 11 goals in 2025 and is second in assists with 11. Kelly has at least five points in all four of the Red Storm's games this season. The Red Hook, N.Y., native is up to 158 career points, needing just one to tie Joe Madsen for fifth place on the program's all-time scoring list. Over the past three seasons, Kelly has 20 points in three games against the Pride.
Adrian Nowak continued his strong play to open 2025, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist on Saturday. The sophomore's 13 helpers are the most on the team, while his 20 points are second best. Nowak also set new career-bests against Hofstra with four groundballs and four caused turnovers.
Freshman Mitch Campbell scored twice and added an assist in his first career start. In two games this week, Campbell has four goals and four assists. Bobby Seel also added a pair of goals to extend his team-best point streak to 20 games, dating back to the 2023 season.
Drew Wasserman found the back of the net for the second-straight game, while Dan Koban notched a fourth-quarter score for his fourth tally of 2025.
Freshman Jayson Cardenas had his second goal in as many games, giving him three points on the season.
Long pole defenseman Quinn Falasca continued to impress in his rookie campaign, scooping a team-high six groundballs, bringing his season total to 19, the most on the team. Harry Noel, Dylan Lee and Zander Hauck each caused a pair of giveaways. In net, Patrick Scarborough made 15 saves on 28 shots faced.
The Red Storm converted its only man-up opportunity of the afternoon and won the groundball battle, 39-36.
Drew Bogardus had a monster day for the visitors, tallying seven scores on just nine shots. Trey Parkes had a goal on three helpers, while Trevor Natalie found the back of the net in overtime to win the game for Hofstra (3-1).
Cole Myers won 15-of-28 faceoffs, and netminder Shea Kennedy made 12 stops between the pipes.
With the win, Hofstra improves to 21-6 all-time against the St. John's and takes the first-ever meeting between the two programs at Belson Stadium.
Campbell started the scoring for the Red Storm, tallying two goals in the first seven minutes of the opening quarter. Wasserman found the back of the net at the 7:12 mark off a Cardenas feed to give St. John's a 3-0 lead, and Seel ran down the right slot and ripped a shot past Kennedy's left shoulder to make it 4-0 less than 10 minutes in. Hofstra scored its first goal late in the quarter to end the first, 4-1. Scarborough made five saves in the opening frame.
Kelly netted his first of the game to start the second quarter, finishing off a St. John's fast-break to regain the Red Storm's four-goal advantage, 5-1. The Pride responded with four straight tallies to tie the game at 5-5, but Kelly answered with his second of the quarter with just over two minutes remaining in the half to give St. John's a 6-5 lead. After Hofstra knotted the score again, Nowak's man-up score sent the Johnnies into the locker room with a 7-6 edge.

After Cardenas scored off a Kelly assist to make it 9-8 Red Storm, the teams continued to go back and forth as Hofstra tied it again. Kelly got his third point of the quarter, scoring with just three seconds on the clock to earn St. John's a 10-9 advantage after the third stanza.
Hofstra started the fourth with two consecutive scores to take its first lead of the day, 11-10. Seel brought the Johnnies level with an acrobatic finish at the 7:22 mark, and Koban bounced a shot into the twine with 3:51 remaining to go back in front, 12-11. The Pride quickly answered to send the game into the extra session.
The teams traded scoring opportunities to start the overtime period, but Hofstra finally broke through, scoring the game-winner with 1:08 on the clock.
St. John's will be back in action next Friday when it hosts Jacksonville. Faceoff at Belson Stadium is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
