St. John’s Fourth Quarter Comeback Against Jacksonville Falls Short in Overtime, 11-10

Patrick Scarborough matched his career-best with 16 saves for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2025) – The St. John's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit but eventually fell to Jacksonville in overtime, 11-10, on Friday afternoon at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
After falling behind 9-6 in the third quarter, the Johnnies (2-3) went on a 4-0 run to take a late one-goal lead in the fourth but could not hold on, falling in the extra session for the second game in a row.
Goalkeeper Patrick Scarborough continued his excellent start to the season, tying his career-best with 16 saves. Through four starts this year, the Dickinson transfer has eclipsed 14 stops thrice and has a 53 percent save rate.
Freshman Jayson Cardenas was the story offensively for the Red Storm, scoring two fourth-quarter goals and tallying his first-career hat trick. Cardenas has seven points in five games this season and is converting on 41.7 percent of his shots.
Bobby Seel scored a goal and dished two assists, giving the senior 10 points on the season and extending his team-best point streak to 21 games.
After recording at least five points in the team's first four games of the season, Brian Kelly scored two goals, giving the second-year captain 158 points in his career which is tied for fourth most in program history. On the year, Kelly has a team-high 13 goals and 24 points.
In his second career start, rookie Mitch Campbell had his third-consecutive multi-point game, tallying two scores and a helper on Friday. Campbell is tied for third on the team and first among freshmen with 12 points in 2025.
Adrian Nowak had a one-goal, one-assist performance, giving him a team-best 14 helpers on the year, while Drew Wasserman found the back of the net for the third time of the young campaign.
Defensively, Quinn Falasca caused three more turnovers, giving the freshman 10 on the season, tying him with Dylan Lee for the team lead. After entering Friday's game with a BIG EAST-best 2.25 caused turnovers per game, Lee had one forced giveaway and scooped three groundballs.
Jacksonville (3-2) outshot St. John's 17-8 in the opening quarter, but the Red Storm won the shots battle the rest of the way, 34-29, including outfiring the Dolphins 18-5 in the fourth quarter.
Eight players combined for Jacksonville's 11 goals. Ethan LaMond, Daylin John-Hill and Jackson Intrieri each found the back of the net twice, while Inteieri had five assists on the afternoon. LaMond's second score of the game gave the Dolphins the win in overtime.
After earning an early man-up opportunity, Wasserman opened the scoring off a feed from Nowak. Jacksonville scored as the shot clock expired, but Nowak responded 20 seconds later to give the Red Storm a 2-1 lead. Kelly beat a double team to bounce one past Rocco before Seel scored on the run, putting the Johnnies up 4-1. Jacksonville added one more before the end of the quarter to make it 4-2 after one. Scarborough made six saves in the opening frame.
Campbell scored unassisted to open the second quarter, but two consecutive tallies from the Dolphins made it 5-4 with eight minutes to go in the half. The remainder of the quarter was a defensive battle, sending the teams into the locker room separated by just a goal.
Cardenas found the back of the net on the first possession of the third quarter, giving the Johnnies a two-goal advantage, 6-4. Jacksonville quickly responded, rattling off five straight scores throughout the remainder of the quarter to take its first lead of the afternoon, 9-6.
Down three to start the final frame, the St. John's offense came to life with a 4-0 run of its own. Kelly broke the Red Storm's scoring drought at the 10:16 mark before Campbell finished a feed from Seel less than a minute later to make it 10-8. Jayson Cardenas tied it with 3:22 left and completed the hat trick at the 2:04 mark to regain the lead, 10-9. Four Scarborough stops kept the Dolphins' offense quiet, but the visitors finally broke through with 1:14 remaining to send the game to the extra session.
In overtime, Nowak got a clean look on net, but Rocco made a tremendous save. Jacksonville scored on the ensuing possession to escape with the 11-10 win.
Friday marked the first time St. John's has gone into overtime in back-to-back games since 1986.
The Johnnies will wrap up its four-game homestand on Tuesday when they host No. 18/16 Fairfield. Faceoff from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
