QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team will open up its outdoor season at the USF Alumni Invitational in Tampa, Fla., this weekend. The meet will kick off at the USF Track & Field Stadium on Friday at 10 a.m. men's javelin and conclude on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Red Storm will open its outdoor season in Tampa, Fla., for the third-consecutive season. Last year, the Johnnies picked up four top-10 finishes while four players earned personal-best efforts at USF's annual home meet.
The Johnnies are coming off of a successful showing at the Indoor BIG EAST Track & Field Championships in Chicago, where the team came in third place after racking up 93 total points. The finish marked the program's highest since it finished in the same spot in 2018.
Jamora Alves is primed for a big outdoor season after leading the Red Storm throwers during the indoor campaign. The Grenada native brought home a gold medal in the shot put during the Indoor BIG EAST Championships after producing a school record toss of 15.69 meters.
The Johnnies 4x400-meter relay squad of Jalen Jackson, Maddie Kelso-Heap, Chinenye Onuorah and Nora Haugen is coming off a strong indoor campaign, where they won the BIG EAST Championship on a time of 3:40.80.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji had a career indoor season, picking up BIG EAST podium finishes in the long jump and 60-meter dash. The junior notched a silver medal in the 60-meter dash on a personal-best 7.50-second finish and a bronze medal in the long jump off a major career-best leap of 6.00 meters.
Nora Haugen and Chinenye Onuorah will look to get back to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in 2025. In the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships, Haugen broke her own school record of 2:05.87 for the second time this season with a 2:04.64 finish in the 800-meter run, while Onuorah finished the 400 meters in third place, taking home a bronze medal on a 53.97-second finish in the league championship.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo will lead the St. John's distance runners after setting a new personal record time of 9:53.11 in the 3,000-meter run in the conference indoor championships to come in 15th place.
Following this weekend's outdoor season-opening meet, the Red Storm will return home to host The Big Hurt at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday, March 29.
