St. John’s Opens Outdoor Season at USF Alumni Invitational

The Red Storm posted top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run, 5,000-meter run, 400-meter dash, shot put and discus
TAMPA, Fla. – The St. John's track & field team opened its outdoor season at the USF Alumni Invitational this weekend at the USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
As a team, the Johnnies posted four top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run, 5,000-meter run, 400-meter dash, shot put and discus in its first outdoor meet of the season.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo shined and broke the program record in the 5,000-meter run, coming in third place on a time of 17:01.22 in her first career appearance in the event. The freshman's mark shattered Eva Shield's record of 17:13.0 from the 1985 Colonial Relays by nearly 12 seconds. Ezgi Yasar and Naiara Garcia also excelled in the distance events. Yasar tallied a personal-record 4:42.84 effort for 27th in the 1,500-meter run while Garcia recorded a time of 4:46.91 for 30th in her event debut.
Nora Haugen kicked off her outdoor season with a bang, posting a second-place effort in the 800-meter run on a 2:04.71 finishing time. Naiara Garcia came in 23rd place on a 2:11.98 effort while Leilani Robinson finished in 27th on a time of 2:14.35.
In the shot put, Jamora Alves continued her monstrous junior season with a 15.42-meter throw, good enough for fourth place. Juliet Smith finished in second for the Red Storm off a heave of 12.58 meters, while Desiree Pagan rounded out the Johnnies showing in the event, registering a 10.91-meter throw.
Alves continued her fantastic outdoor debut, logging a seventh-place finish in the discus. The junior produced a heave of 48.41 meters in the event. Maja Henry ended her outing in the contest with a 16th place finish from a 42.56-meter toss while Pagan placed 34th on a throw of 37.29 meters.
Chinenye Onuorah registered an eighth-place result in the 400-meter dash, on a 54.18-second finish. Haugen came in 12th from a 54.63-second pace, while Leilani Robinson ended the race in 32nd off a personal-record 56.56 finishing time. Nyla Henderson notched a 57.06-second finishing time for 25th before Ryana Dennis and Jalen Jackson placed back-to-back on times of 57.48 and 57.66 seconds, respectively. Maddie Kelso-Heap and Djassi Dean capped off the event for the Johnnies, going around the track in 57.86 and 59.33 seconds.
In the triple jump, Fia Viklund rang up a leap of 11.72 meters for 13th place in the event. Ashley Sadler tied her career-best leap of 1.60 meters, for 13th in the high jump. Ruth Smith posted a jump of 1.55 meters in the event for 19th.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji opened her outdoor season with a leap of 5.48 meters in the long jump for 13th place. Jade Dockery finished in 26th, producing a jump of 5.14 meters in her first-ever collegiate outdoor meet.
Colette Metcalf kicked off her outdoor pole vault season by producing a mark of 3.45 meters for 20th place.
Kelso-Heap led the Red Storm in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing the race in 1:02.59 for 23rd place. Djassi Dean placed second on the Red Storm and 27th overall, off a 1:03.30 finish, while Ciara Wiltshire and Sophia Leslie rounded out the Johnnies' participation in the event with marks of 1:07.36 and 1:07.67, respectively.
In the hammer throw, Pagan registered a career-best toss of 47.57 meters for 25th place in the event. Smith followed behind her with a heave of 39.43 meters.
In the 100-meter dash, Lemus Sodji sprinted the race in 12.20 seconds for 34th place. Onuorah paced the Red Storm in the 200-meter dash, racing the event in 24.52 seconds for 40th place.
The Red Storm will return home next weekend to host its annual home meet, The Big Hurt, at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y.
