The Red Storm earned a pair of runners in the top of the third as Jeremiah and Cristian Bernardini smacked back-to-back base hits, putting Johnnies on first and second base. Winthrop got out of the no-out jam with three consecutive fly-outs to retire the frame.
St. John's put itself on the board in the fourth. Following Cowan singling into right-center and Agresti walking, Orbon smashed an RBI one-bagger into right-center field that plated Cowan and cut the Red Storm's deficit down to four, 5-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Winthrop took advantage of a bases-loaded situation, bringing in a pair of tallies off a single and a walk to grow the home advantage to six, 7-1. AJ Lausten came on in relief, stopping the bleeding with a fielder's choice and a flyout.
In the top side of the seventh stanza, the Johnnies earned a pair of runners after Jeremiah whacked a base knock into center field and Tucker reached on an Eagles miscue. Winthrop was able to flip the frame, keeping the Red Storm off the board after finding two straight outs.
The Eagles tacked on eight insurance runs between the seventh and eighth innings off a combination of four RBI singles, a two-run double, a fielder's choice and an error, pushing its lead to 15-1.
