22-Hit Explosion Propels St. John’s Past Winthrop, 20-15

The Red Storm scored 20 runs for the first time since it took down Butler, 24-5, on May 18, 2023
Jackson Tucker was tremendous on Saturday afternoon, going 3-for-5 with two walks, a career-high five runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. The senior's five runs marked the most scored by a member of the Red Storm since Jamie Galazin scored the same amount against UConn on March 16, 2018.
Jayder Raifstanger reached base safely five times on three hits and two free passes while scoring a career-best four runs. Jared Beebe reached base in all seven appearances at the plate on four hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch with two RBIs and two scores. Luke Orbon went 3-for-6 at the plate alongside a pair of scores and RBIs.
Will Cowan and Jace Jeremiah paced the Red Storm with a season-high four RBIs. Both batters registered a double and two runs scored in the second game of the team's weekend series. Jon LeGrande hit a two-run homer in the contest.
Jed Boyle shined out of the bullpen, picking up his third win of the season after tossing 2.1 innings of shutout ball and striking out five of seven batters faced.
As a team, the Red Storm scored 20 runs and racked up 22 hits against Winthrop. The squad's 20 runs mark the first time the program tallied that amount since it defeated Butler, 24-5, on May 18, 2023. Additionally, the game marked the first time the team logged 20 or more hits since it tallied 21 against Quinnipiac on March 18, 2023.
After a quiet first inning, Winthrop got on the board in the bottom of the second. Nate Chronis worked a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a groundout. The Eagle's catcher scored on an RBI single, giving the home team a 1-0 edge early in the ballgame.
In the away side of the third, the Red Storm put up a two-spot. Tucker singled into left field, stole second and moved to third on a Winthrop error, before being brought home on a Cowan sacrifice fly. Sean Britt then mashed a 2-2 pitch through the right side for a base hit, scoring Raifstanger, who got on base by a walk, to take a slim 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases, Winthrop scored six runs on a walk, a fielder's choice, a pair of doubles and an error, going ahead, 7-2.
The Johnnies tacked on three scores in the fourth frame. Jeremiah smacked a base hit into left field, advanced to second on a groundout and was brought home on a Tucker RBI single. Raifstanger then singled while Beebe was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Cowan, who smashed a two-run base knock into center, cutting the Red Storm's deficit to two, 7-5.
Winthrop took advantage of two runners in scoring position in the home half of the fourth stanza, plating both of them on a two-run single and pushing its lead up to 9-5. In the fifth, the Eagles tacked on another three tallies after walking in a trio of runs in with the bases loaded, going up by seven, 12-5.
The Red Storm erupted for a nine-run sixth inning to take the lead. Tucker started the rally by getting plucked before Raifstanger singled to right field. Beebe kicked off the scoring by lining a base hit into center field, bringing Tucker home ahead of a Cowan one-bagger that loaded the bases. Britt then crushed a two-run single, which was followed by Orbon lacing an RBI base hit of his own into right field, ringing up two runs. After Jeremiah whacked a two-run double into left field, LeGrande sent the go-ahead two-run homer into right field, giving the Johnnies a 13-12 edge. Beebe capped off the frame with his second hit of the inning, delivering yet another run to put St. John's up by two, 14-12.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles trimmed the Red Storm's advantage to one, 14-13, with an RBI single.
The Johnnies added a score in the top of the eighth inning. Raifstanger was issued a free pass with one out, behind a Beebe single that moved him to second. Cowan proceeded to slap an RBI double into right-center, scoring Raifstanger to go up by two, 15-13.
Winthrop tied the game, 15-15, in the bottom of the eighth frame, taking advantage of a two-out two-run double off the bat of Jaylen Hernandez.
The Red Storm swiped the lead in the 10th inning. Tucker sliced a single into center, stole his second base of the day and was sent home on a Winthrop error to claim the advantage. The Johnnies juiced the bases after Agresti walked, scoring four more runs on an Orbon hit-by-pitch, a Jeremiah two-run base hit and a Tucker walk to take a 20-15 lead. Boyle went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th, securing the win for the Johnnies in extras.
The Red Storm will take on the Eagles in a rubber match tomorrow afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
