Shaun McMillan registered two hits and four RBIs
Shaun McMillan was integral in the Red Storm's comeback, totaling a team-best and season-high four RBIs with two runs on two hits, including his team-leading fourth homer of the year. Adam Agresti also tallied two runs scored with two RBIs, both of which came off a fifth-inning long ball. Luke Orbon and Jace Jeremiah logged two hits apiece against the Eagles while Jackson Tucker and Jayder Raifstanger each batted in a pair of runs on a hit.
Tyler Longoria and Sam Mettert were phenomenal out of the bullpen, combining for six scoreless innings. Longoria only allowed one run on two hits with a pair of punchouts in 4.1 innings of work to earn his second win of the season. Mettert closed out the game for the Johnnies, allowing no runs and no hits with three strikeouts, earning his second save of the year.
Winthrop brought in the first runs of the game in the opening stanza. After loading the bases on a hit and two walks, the Eagles scored three on a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly, going ahead 3-0.
The Eagles put up a six spot in the bottom of the third inning, batting around their order and taking advantage of two singles, two doubles and a fielder's choice to grow the home advantage to 9-0.
The Johnnies put themselves on the board in the top of the fifth. McMillan dropped a base hit into right field before Agresti smashed a two-run shot over the left field wall for his third homer of the season, cutting the Red Storm's deficit down to 9-2.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, St. John's took the lead with an eight-run seventh stanza. Jared Beebe and Will Cowan jump-started the frame with free passes off a hit-by-pitch and walk, giving two runners to McMillan, who crushed an opposite-field three-run homer into right. Agresti then worked a five-pitch walk, sprinted to third after Orbon lined a hit into right field, and scored on a Jeremiah RBI one-bagger. Jon LeGrande juiced the bases with a single in front of Raifstanger's at-bat, where he mashed a two-run line drive to right field, tying the game. McMillan capped off the scoring with his fourth RBI of the frame, plating Raifstanger with a fielder's choice to take a 10-9 edge.
In the away half of the eighth inning, the Johnnies added another tally to their total. Orbon and Jeremiah smacked consecutive base hits, ahead of Tucker batting Orbon in on an infield single, increasing the Red Storm lead to two, 11-9.
Longoria and Mettert cruised across the fourth through ninth innings, allowing no hits en route to the Johnnies taking the weekend series rubber match.
The Red Storm will finish off its road swing when it takes on Wagner on Tuesday, March 25. First pitch from Staten Island, N.Y. is scheduled for 3 p.m.
