Senior shoots 6-under, 66, in opening round as the Red Storm lead the nine-team field
FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – Fueled by a 6-under, 66, opening round from St. John's men's golf standout Peicheng Chen the Red Storm lead the field at the Sacred Heart Spring Break Invite.
The Johnnies carded a 4-over, 292, to sit atop the standings after battling through windy conditions at Eagle Harbor Golf Club in northern Florida. The Red Storm hold a four-stroke lead over second place Bryant heading into the clubhouse before tomorrow's final round.
Chen, who has won three of his five stroke play events this season turned in a scorching 6-under, 66, to jump ahead of the field by four strokes after logging a bogey-free first 18 holes in Fleming Island, Fla. The Beijing, China native made four of his six birdies on the back nine.
Freshman Joseph Dolezal posted a strong round carding a 2-over, 74, to tie for fifth place on the leaderboard. David Mlynek and Brandon Sperling checked in next for St. John's as all nine Red Storm golfers competed on Monday. The duo finished the first round with a 4-over, 76. Frank Wu was the fifth Johnnie to slide into the top-20 with a 5-over, 77, on Wednesday.
The Red Storm will look to claim its second team title of the 2024-25 campaign when it competes in the final round of the Sacred Heart Spring invite. Play will commence with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and live results will be accessible here.
