Jayder Raifstanger collected four RBIs on two hits and a walk
Jayder Raifstanger enjoyed a fantastic showing against the Musketeers, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a walk, four RBIs and a run scored. The sophomore third baseman is currently slashing .352/.457/.520 alongside a team-best 44 hits, 26 RBIs and 24 runs scored, this season.
Luke Orbon scored two runs and drove one in off a double and a walk on Saturday afternoon. Jared Beebe smacked an RBI double in the contest, while Will Cowan tallied a hit, a walk and a score at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Jon LeGrande reached base in all four of his at-bats, tallying a hit, three walks and a run, along with two stolen bases. Jackson Tucker registered a bunt single and an RBI, in addition to a pair of walks.
Evan Chaffee matched his career-high of eight strikeouts, battling across 5.0 innings in his eighth start of the season. Tyler Longoria picked up the win after tossing 0.2 innings of relief. Jed Boyle shined, pitching 2.0 scoreless frames for the second day in a row to notch his second save of the season.
Xavier struck in the top of the first inning. After two Musketeers worked their way on base through walks, Aedan Anderson hit a blooping RBI single into center field with two outs. Nolan Tucker then hit a double into left field to score another runner, giving the away team an early 2-0 edge.
The Red Storm put itself on the board in the bottom of the opening frame. With one out, Raifstanger worked a walk to put a runner on for Beebe, who smacked an RBI double that one-hopped the center field wall, plating Raifstanger from first base to cut the home deficit to one, 2-1.
Following Chaffee striking out the side in the top of the second inning, the Johnnies took their first lead in the home half of the frame. Sean Britt and Jace Jeremiah both were issued free passes, with Britt moving over to third on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. Britt then scored on a wild pitch, tying the game, before LeGrande and Tucker both worked walks to load the bases. Another run would come across on a groundout, giving St. John's a 3-2 advantage.
In the top of the fifth stanza, the Musketeers jumped in front with a two-spot. The away team used a walk and a pair of base hits to load the bases with one out. Connor Misch took advantage of the situation, hitting a two-run single to give Xavier a 4-3 lead. Chaffee settled back in tossing a strikeout and a groundout to retire the side.
Dylan Johnson, who came on in relief for Chaffee, worked himself out of a two runners-on-base situation in the top half of the sixth. The righty earned three outs, all coming in one at-bat, off a caught stealing attempt and a double play to flip the inning.
The Red Storm went back in front with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning. Orbon, LeGrande and Tucker all walked to juice the bases with two outs. Raifstanger then crushed a three-run double into center field, plating all three runners and giving the Red Storm a two-run lead, 6-4.
Xavier answered right back by retying the game in the away half of the seventh. The Musketeers loaded the bases from a combination of two walks and a single up the middle, knotting the game, 6-6, on a two-run base knock.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Johnnies threw a counter punch to take the lead back. Cowan lined a single into right field and moved all the way over to third from a wild pitch and a groundout. Orbon proceeded to lace an RBI double into right field plating Cowan to break the tie. Jeremiah and LeGrande then reached from a walk and a base hit, loading the bases, ahead of Tucker laying down a bunt single to score Orbon and push St. John's ahead, 8-6.
Boyle entered the game with a bases-loaded threat in the top side of the eighth. The reliever was able to neutralize the threat and flip the frame with an infield popup and a double play. Boyle cruised through the final stanza, going 1-2-3 en route to his second save of the season and an 8-6 Red Storm victory.
The Red Storm will finish off its series against Xavier tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch from Queens, N.Y., is slated for noon.
