Jackson Tucker became the 25th member of the Red Storm’s 200 hits club with a 3-for-4 day
Jackson Tucker had a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two walks, alongside four runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. With his trio of hits, the senior outfielder is now the 25th Johnnie in program history to join the 200-hit club, becoming the first to do so since now-Assistant Coach John Valente did it 2018. The Staten Island, N.Y., native also tied 2025 Jack Kaiser Advocate Award Winner Giancarlo DiPrima for fourth all-time on the program's career stolen bases list with 85 in his St. John's tenure.
Jared Beebe tallied a season-high five hits, falling just a triple short of the cycle with a home run and a double. The senior first baseman also posted three RBIs and three scores in the contest. The Atco, N.J., native became the first member of the Red Storm to tally five hits in a single contest since Blake Mayberry went 5-for-5 against Winthrop on March 29, 2024.
Shaun McMillan had a brilliant day in the Johnnies series finale, going a season-best 4-for-5 at the dish with a double and four RBIs. The freshman currently leads St. John's with a .375/.442/.625 slash line, 29 RBIs and five home runs.
Jayder Raifstanger posted three hits, three runs scored and an RBI on Sunday afternoon. Will Cowan logged a pair of hits and RBIs at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Luke Orbon scored two runs and drove one in on a hit and a walk, while Jon LeGrande picked up two RBIs and a score with a stolen base.
Victor Frederick notched his second win of the year on Sunday, pitching five complete innings with a season-high six strikeouts.
With the win, the Johnnies now boast a 6-0 record in the BIG EAST for the first time since the 2018 season, when they started 9-0. The squad also posted 20 hits in a game for the second time this season.
In the top of the first inning, Xavier scored the initial run of the contest to take an early lead. The Musketeers loaded the bases from a walk and two singles, taking advantage of the situation by scoring a run from a hit-by-pitch to earn an early edge, 1-0.
The Johnnies evened things up in the bottom of the first frame. Tucker opened the side by chopping an infield single and moving all the way to third on a blooping base hit into right field from Beebe. McMillan plated Tucker with an RBI single struck up the middle, knotting the contest, 1-1.
The Musketeers jumped back in front in the top half of the second. With two outs, Jake Lambdin was plunked, just ahead of Carter Hendrickson sending a two-run homer to left field to put Xavier back in front, 3-1.
The Red Storm countered again with a four-spot to take the lead in the bottom of the second stanza. Orbon led off the inning with a seven-pitch walk and advanced home on a pair of groundouts. Tucker then smacked a double into left field and was brought to the plate on a Raifstanger RBI single, that tied the game. Beebe proceeded to drill a base hit, giving McMillan a pair of base runners, who he plated on a two-run double that was sent into right field, giving St. John's a 5-3 advantage.
The Johnnies erupted for another four-run inning in the third. Orbon became the first base runner of the frame, poking a single through the right side, ahead of moving over to second base, one out later. LeGrande started the scoring, singling through the right side and bringing Orbon home. LeGrande then stole second base and was waved home on Tucker's third hit of the day, in front of Raifstanger reaching on a one-bagger that was sent into right field. Beebe blooped a base knock into right, scoring Tucker, while McMillan blasted another single up the middle, driving Raifstanger home and extending the lead to six, 9-3.
Xavier tacked on a score in the top of the fourth. Jason Jelic led off the inning with a triple and was sent to the plate on a groundout, cutting the away team's deficit to five, 9-4.
In the home half of the fifth frame, the Red Storm tacked on another two runs. Raifstanger led off the side with a blooper into center field and advanced over to third after Beebe mashed a double through the left side. Cowan brought both runners home on an infield single, extending the Johnnies' advantage to seven, 11-4.
Following scoreless sixth and seventh innings, St. John's tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth stanza. Tucker worked his way on with a walk and proceeded to steal second and third base with two outs. Beebe then crushed a 2-1 pitch into the visiting bullpen for a two-run homer that pushed the Johnnies advantage to nine, 13-4.
Chad Falcon went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning, ensuring a 13-4 victory and a series sweep for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Hofstra in a midweek contest. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
