Hofstra scored the first run of the game in the top of the opening inning. After Dylan Palmer tripled down the right field line, an RBI groundout brought him home, giving the Pride an early 1-0 edge.
The Johnnies tied things up in the bottom of the second frame. Cowan, Britt and Luke Orbon all reached on three consecutive base hits, loading the bases. Cowan came across to score on a Tucker bunt single, tying the game, 1-1.
In the home half of the third stanza, the Johnnies jumped in front with a four-spot. Beebe kicked off the side by sending a double to the left field wall before Shaun McMillan worked a walk. Cowan sent Beebe home from second, pushing a single through the right side, ahead of Jace Jeremiah working an RBI walk that plated McMillan, two outs later. LeGrande capped off the four-run inning by blasting a two-run single up the middle, giving St. John's a 5-1 advantage.
AJ Lausten flew through the fifth and sixth frames, only giving up one hit and no runs to keep the Red Storm ahead.
In the top of the seventh, Hofstra threatened with runners on the corners and one out. Brady Clark was able to settle in and keep the Pride at bay, flipping the side with a caught stealing attempt and a groundout.
Hofstra put up six tallies in the away side of the eighth inning. Following two members of the Pride reaching on a single and a walk, Luke Masiuk doubled into right-center field, scoring both runners. An out later, the Pride plated two more on a single and a sacrifice fly, while another pair went home on a two-run single, giving the away team a two-run lead, 7-5.
The Johnnies tacked on a run in the home half of the eighth. LeGrande started the side by slapping a triple into deep right center, coming home on a sacrifice fly from Tucker that cut the Red Storm's deficit to one, 7-6.
Chad Falcon shut down Hofstra in the top of the ninth, but the Red Storm weren't able to score, as the Pride held on for a 7-6 victory.
St. John's will hit the road and head to Omaha, Neb., where it will meet BIG EAST rival Creighton for a three-game set this weekend. The series will kick off on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET from Charles Schwab Stadium Omaha.
