St. John’s Drops First Two Games In Series Against Creighton

Jackson Tucker notched sole possession of third place on the Red Storm’s all-time steals list
Jackson Tucker went 4-for-10 across the first two games of the weekend, posting four scores, three RBIs, a home run and a trio of stolen bases. With his three stolen bags, the Staten Island, N.Y., native moved into sole possession of third place on the Red Storm's career stolen bases list, surpassing Thomas Cipolla with 88 in his St. John's career.
Jayder Raifstanger had an impressing day at the plate against the Bluejays, producing four hits, including a double with two RBIs and a run scored. Jon LeGrande added another four hits, four runs, two RBIs and three stolen bags at Charles Schwab Field. Jared Beebe logged three hits and three RBIs between the first two contests.
Game 1: St. John's 8, Creighton 12
Tucker showed out in game one of the weekend series, going 3-for-5 at the dish with a home run, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.
Raifstanger also had a three-hit day, logging a double, a walk and a score. Jace Jeremiah and LeGrande each picked up a pair of hits against the Bluejays. LeGrande hit his third triple of the season with two runs and an RBI, while Jeremiah secured a tally and an RBI. Beebe added two RBIs on a hit and a walk in the contest.
The Johnnies' bats started the game hot, jumping out to a lead in the top of the first inning. Tucker opened the frame by working a walk before Raifstanger doubled into right field. Tucker scored on an RBI groundout, while Raifstanger came home after Shaun McMillan crushed a double into left field, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 edge.
Following a pitcher's duel between David Rodriguez and Creighton's Jack Pineau in the second through fourth innings, St. John's extended its lead in the fifth. LeGrande led off the stanza by smacking a single into right field and stealing second, sliding through the defender's legs to snag the base. Tucker then sent an RBI single up the middle, plating LeGrande, while Beebe whacked another RBI base hit through the left side that brought Tucker home and increased the Johnnies' advantage to 4-0.
Creighton put itself on the board in the top of the fifth. After a runner got on with a single and moved to second on a passed ball, he came to the plate on a Red Storm defensive miscue. Another Bluejay scored on a single into left field, cutting the home deficit down to two, 4-2.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Red Storm loaded the bases on a pair of Tucker and Raifstanger singles and an intentional walk issued to Beebe. Creighton got out of the jam with a popup to shortstop, retiring the side.
Creighton took the lead in the home half of the sixth stanza. Two batters reached on a double and a hit-by-pitch, ahead of Will McLean hitting an RBI single into right field. A two-run double and two RBI triples capped the scoring in the inning, giving the Bluejays a 7-4 edge.
After the game continued on Friday, the home team added another two runs in the seventh. After Creighton loaded the bases from three free passes, they scored two runners on a bloop single into left field, extending the lead to five, 9-4.
The Johnnies chopped down the lead to three in the top half of the eighth frame. With one out, LeGrande reached on a fielder's choice, giving a runner to Tucker, who slugged a 400-foot two-run homer into the left field bleachers to trail by three, 9-6.
The Bluejays tacked on three insurance tallies in the bottom of the eighth. Creighton opened up the inning with a double and a walk, scoring the runner on second with an RBI single. Two more came across the plate on a pair of sacrifice flies to go up by six, 12-6.
Adam Agresti was plunked in the bottom of the ninth and worked his way around to third on a groundout and passed ball. Jeremiah sent Agresti home on an RBI single, while LeGrande whacked an RBI triple into right-center that plated Jeremiah and cut the home advantage to 12-8. The Johnnies weren't able to find any more runs, as Creighton held on to claim the first game.
Game 2: St. John's 3, Creighton 4
Beebe and LeGrande each tallied two base hits in the second game of the Red Storm's weekend series. LeGrande posted a pair of scores and stolen bases, while Beebe brought in a run.
Tucker registered a hit, a tally and two stolen bases against the Bluejays. Raifstanger added two RBIs on a hit during Friday evening's contest.
Evan Chaffee had a solid start in Omaha, Neb., hurling for 6.1 innings and only allowing three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.
After a quiet first two innings, the Johnnies put themselves on the board with a two-spot in the top of the third. LeGrande and Tucker each kicked off the inning by lacing base hits into right field, putting runners on the corners. LeGrande scored on an error by Creighton's shortstop, before Tucker stole third and rounded third base on a Beebe RBI single, giving the Red Storm an early 2-0 edge.
The Bluejays countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. After Max Scherrman walked, he went around the bases on a base hit and a St. John's defensive miscue to post Creighton's first run of the day, 2-1.
Chaffee rolled through the sixth inning, allowing only giving up two hits and a walk with no runs scored.
St. John's tacked on a tally in the away side of the seventh inning. With one out, LeGrande singled through the right side and snagged his second stolen base of the day. Raifstanger slashed a base knock up the middle, plating LeGrande to extend the Red Storm's lead back to two, 3-1.
The Bluejays took the lead in the bottom of the seventh stanza. Following two batters reaching from a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Scherrman hit a three-run homer into left field, giving the home team a slim 4-3 lead.
Despite Chad Falcon reaching on a single in the ninth, the Johnnies couldn't get a run across as Creighton took the second game of the series.
St. John's will finish off its set against Creighton tomorrow afternoon in Omaha, Neb. First pitch from Charles Schwab Field is set for 1 p.m. ET.
