St. John’s Falls to Creighton, 4-3, in Series Finale

Jon LeGrande tallied two hits and a run against the Bluejays
OMAHA, Neb. – The St. John's baseball team (19-17, 6-3 BIG EAST) fell to Creighton (23-12, 6-3 BIG EAST), 4-3, in Saturday afternoon's series finale at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.
Jon LeGrande led the Johnnies with a pair of hits, a run scored and a stolen base in Omaha, Neb. Jayder Raifstanger posted two RBIs on a hit and a walk, while Jackson Tucker brought in a run on a hit and a walk on Saturday. Jace Jeremiah scored a run to go alongside a double.
Victor Frederick went for five innings in the sixth start of his collegiate career, giving up three runs with five strikeouts. Sam Mettert and Jed Boyle combined for 2.0 innings of one-hit ball, each picking up a punchout along the way.
Frederick opened the bottom of the first inning by striking out the side on 13 total pitches, stranding a runner on second base.
After Frederick retired the second frame with a strikeout and a double play, the Johnnies jumped in front during the top of the third. Jeremiah led off the inning by doubling into right-center field before Tucker smacked a high fastball through the right side, plating Jeremiah to take an initial 1-0 edge.
In the away half of the fifth stanza, the Red Storm extended its lead. LeGrande kicked things off by smacking a single through the right side and stealing second base. Raifstanger proceeded to whack a base knock through the left side, scoring LeGrande and growing St. John's advantage to 2-0.
The Bluejays took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Creighton capitalized on a combination of a no-out RBI triple and RBI single with a two-out RBI double to go in front by one, 3-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the home team tacked on another run to grow its advantage. After a runners reached and advanced on a single and a fielder's choice, the Bluejays added a tally with a sacrifice fly to lead by two, 4-2.
The Red Storm cut its deficit down to one in the top of the seventh frame. Jeremiah walked and LeGrande sent a base hit into right field, ahead of a sacrifice bunt from Tucker that moved them both over a base. Raifstanger produced an RBI groundout that scored Jeremiah, chopping the home advantage down to one, 4-3.
Mettert and Boyle shut down Creighton's lineup in the seventh and eighth innings, limiting the Bluejays to just one hit, but the Red Storm couldn't generate a base runner in the top of the ninth, as the Bluejays held on to claim the win.
The Red Storm will return home to face Rutgers in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, April 22. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
