Jeremiah hit the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning
QUEENS, N.Y. – Ninth inning heroics from Jace Jeremiah propelled the St. John's baseball team (20-17, 6-3 BIG EAST) past Rutgers (18-23, 7-11 Big Ten), 6-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
Jeremiah hit the walk-off RBI single, his sole hit of the contest, to score Cristian Bernardini in the bottom of the ninth inning, securing the win for the Red Storm.
Jared Beebe dominated in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a run scored and an RBI. The senior first baseman is now slashing .364/.429/.552 with a team-leading 17 doubles, 30 RBIs and 28 scores.
Jayder Raifstanger and Jon LeGrande both tallied a pair of hits while scoring a run on Tuesday afternoon. Jackson Tucker scored two runs himself, coming off a single and a walk at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Shaun McMillan, Will Cowan and Adam Agresti all notched RBIs against the Scarlet Knights.
Chris Batuyios enjoyed a gritty start on Tuesday, going for five innings, while only letting up one run with four strikeouts. Jed Boyle picked up his team-leading sixth win of the year, tossing 2.0 innings of one-hit ball with a punchout.
After Batuyios handled a two runners on-base situation, the Red Storm put up the first scores of the game in the bottom of the opening inning. The Johnnies loaded the bases off a Tucker single, a Raifstanger hit-by-pitch and a McMillan walk. An RBI fielder's choice and a throwing error on the Scarlet Knights' shortstop plated Tucker and Raifstanger, giving St. John's an initial 2-0 edge.
The Red Storm extended its lead in the home half of the third frame. Tucker led off the inning with a walk before Beebe hit a single through the left side, putting runners on first and second base. McMillan proceeded to smack an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Tucker, before Cowan worked a walk to load the bases. Agresti capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly that brought Beebe home, extending the Johnnies' advantage to 4-0.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Rutgers tallied their first run of the game in the top of the fifth. A pair of Scarlet Knights reached on a single and a walk, as they posted a score on a Jack Sweeney base knock, cutting the home lead down to three, 4-1.
The Johnnies tacked on a tally in the bottom side of the sixth stanza. LeGrande led off the frame with a bunt single before he moved over to third on a sacrifice hit and a flyout. Beebe then crushed an RBI double to the right-center field wall, rounding LeGrande home to go back up by four, 5-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, Rutgers picked up another score. A single and a free pass put two runners on for Trevor Cohen, who hit an RBI single up the middle to score a run. The Scarlet Knights posted another tally on an RBI groundout to second base, cutting their deficit down to two, 5-3.
Rutgers capitalized on a bases-loaded situation in the top of the eighth. After juicing the bags with a pair of singles and a walk, the away team tied the game, 5-5, after a run scored on a double play and another came across on an RBI double.
Boyle cruised through the away half of the ninth, retiring the Scarlet Knights in order, 1-2-3. Bernardini started the ninth inning rally for the Red Storm, singling to the opposing shortstop, ahead of Agresti knocking a base hit through the right side. Jeremiah proved to be the hero, slicing a 1-1 pitch through the right side, scoring Bernardini and giving the Johnnies a 6-5 walk-off victory.
The Red Storm will continue its homestand when it hosts UConn for a three-game series this weekend. The set will begin on Friday at 3 p.m. from Jack Kaiser Stadium.
