Red Storm record lowest three-round tournament since September 2022
PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – The St. John's men's golf team took home the team championship at the GolfWeek Spring Challenge on Wednesday after posting a scoring 23-under, 841, over 54 holes.
The Red Storm caught fire over the final two days of competition at TrueBlue Golf Club in Pawley's Island shooting 23-under over the final two rounds after sitting in eighth place after the opening round. After carding a 13-under, 275, in Tuesday's second round the program's lowest single round score in 18 years, the Johnnies stayed logging a 7-under, 281, during the final 18 holes.
The Johnnies 23-under tournament score marks the program's lowest since the 2022 Doc Gimmler, when the Red Storm turned in a 32-under, 808, on Sept. 10-11 of that year.
With Wednesday's championship, the Red Storm will automatically qualify for the 2026 Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, which annually features some of the top programs from across the country and a trip to the Monday practice round at The Masters.
Heading into the day in second place trailing by three strokes, St. John's ran away with the championship emerging atop the 17-team field for its second title of the 2024-25 campaign.
Freshman Frank Wu had the most impressive performance of his budding collegiate career in South Carolina. After shooting 4-over, 76, in the first round, the IMG Academy product shot 11-under over the final two rounds to earn a top-five finish. The rookie finished with a season-low 7-under, 209, and tallied a career-best 16 birdies, second most amongst the 93-golfer field and logged an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole on Wednesday.
David Mlynek engineered the best performance of his collegiate career shooting a personal best 7-under, 209, over the 54-hole event. The junior put on a consistent showing firing a 2-under or better in all three rounds to tie for fifth place.
Peicheng Chen finished the tournament at 2-under, 214, to take 21st place for the tournament champion Red Storm. Brandon Sperling registered a 2-under, 70, during Wednesday's third round for the Johnnies. Joseph Dolezal checked in tied for 27th place after logging an even par, 216.
The Red Storm will be back in action with the momentum of a team title when it next takes the course for the Robert Kepler Invitational at Ohio State on April 18-19.
