St. John’s Excels in Split Action

The Red Storm honored its nine graduating seniors and graduate students in a senior day ceremony on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team excelled in split action between Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational and the Tom Farrell Classic at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y., on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
The Larry Ellis Invitational:
The Red Storm throwers enjoyed a great showing at Princeton's annual home meet in New Jersey. The Johnnies tallied five top-10 finishes at the meet.
Jamora Alves dominated in the shot put, logging a throw of 15.26 meters for second place. Juliet Smith ended her day in ninth place, ringing up a 12.48-meter blast.
Alves continued to impress at Princeton's home meet, tallying a third-place result on a heave of 50.00 meters in the discus. Maja Henry ended her day in 10th place, producing a throw of 41.28 meters, while Martina De Buglio rang up a 40.13-meter toss for 11th.
In the hammer throw, Desiree Pagan tallied a ninth-place effort on a heave of 49.46 meters. Smith finished in 13th after recording a personal-best toss of 47.87 meters, while De Buglio put forth a throw of 45.36 meters for 20th.
The Tom Farrell Classic:
St. John's dominated in its annual home meet, picking up eight wins and 26 top-five finishes.
During the meet, the program honored its nine graduating seniors and graduate students: Gabriella Caronia, Berit Friedenbach, Colette Metcalf, Amarachukwu Obi, Jordan Brown, Danella Dawkins, Linn Hertz, Rachel Hippolyte and Malia Jones in a senior day ceremony to celebrate their contributions to the university over their Red Storm tenures.
The Johnnies opened their day by tallying a win in the long jump. Hertz provided a leap of 5.54 meters for a gold medal in the event.
The Red Storm picked up their second gold medal of the day in the 4x100-meter relay. The relay squad of Karese Lloyd, Ava Spencer, Dawkins and Ryana Dennis posted a finishing time of 49.20 seconds.
Dawkins won the 100-meter hurdles for her second top finish of the day. The graduate student registered an event-record finishing time of 14.19 seconds. Jerese Allwood finished in third, posting a personal-best mark of 15.02 seconds.
The Red Storm claimed the top six spots in the 400-meter dash. Chinenye Onuorah led the way on an event-record mark of 54.93 seconds for first, while Leilani Robinson came in second on a 56.46-second result. Nyla Henderson ended her day in the event with a time of 57.00 seconds for third, in front of Dennis who paced the race in 57.41 seconds for fifth. Lloyd rounded out the Johnnies' effort in the race, placing sixth on a finishing time of 1:00.29.
Nora Haugen claimed first place in the 800-meter run, running her two laps in 2:05.78. Naiara Garcia placed second in the race on a time of 2:12.65, finishing just ahead of Ezgi Yasar, who finished in third with a time of 2:19.59. Ana Dobsa came in fourth on a mark of 2:29.91, while Mia Torres finished out St. John's participation in the race with a sixth place 2:46.28 mark.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Djassi Dean notched the second win of her outdoor career, producing a season-best and event-record mark of 1:01.63. Maddie Kelso-Heap nabbed a silver medal, racing to a mark of 1:02.54. Ciara Wiltshire and Sophia Leslie finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place, logging marks of 1:06.01 and 1:07.42, respectively.
Ashley Sadler and Ruth Smith tied to notch the top podium spot in the high jump. The pair of jumpers posted a leap of 1.55 meters for first place.
The Red Storm took all three podium spots in the pole vault. Friedenbach and Virginia Lloret tied for first on a leap of 3.51 meters, while Metcalf engineered a vault of 3.21 meters for third.
Fia Viklund produced an event-record 11.71-meter leap in the triple jump for first place. Hertz ended her day in second on a jump of 11.61 meters, to go along with an 11.02-meter third-place effort from Hippolyte.
The Red Storm's 4x400-meter relay team of Jalen Jackson, Onuorah and Haugen finished in first place on an event-record time of 3:39.51.
In the 1,500-meter run, Leyre Campo de Quevedo finished with a silver medal after pacing the race in 4:43.75.
Ava Spencer came in second place in the 100-meter dash, producing a career-record time of 12.25 seconds.
Sadler picked up a second-place effort in the 200-meter dash, running to a time of 26.13 seconds. Hippolyte finished in seventh off a mark of 27.66 seconds, alongside a ninth-place 29.98-second effort from Smith.
Brenin Mahon placed second in the 3,000-meter run, posting a time of 11:40.04.
The Red Storm will return to the track after a week of rest for the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The conference championship will begin on Thursday, May 15.
