St. John’s Sweeps Doubleheader With Seton Hall

The Red Storm has started BIG EAST play 3-0 for the second straight season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (15-13, 3-0 BIG EAST) swept its doubleheader against Seton Hall (12-20, 0-3 BIG EAST), on Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
With the sweep, the Johnnies have started BIG EAST play 3-0 for the second consecutive season. Last year, the Red Storm swept Villanova in its conference-opening series.
Shaun McMillan shined in both games against the Pirates on Sunday, going a combined 5-for-7 at the plate with a home run, a double, three RBIs and a run scored. The freshman is now batting a team-best .363 with 11 extra base hits this season.
Jared Beebe went 3-for-6 on the day with a walk and a pair of scores, while Jace Jeremiah tacked on a pair of hits with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
Game 1: St. John's 3, Seton Hall 2
Jayder Raifstanger, McMillan and Jeremiah all tallied a pair of hits to open the day against the Pirates. McMillan mashed a double and picked up and an RBI, while Raifstanger scored a run and was hit by a pitch.
Beebe and Jackson Tucker both notched a hit and a score on Sunday afternoon. Tucker also stole his 18th base of the season. Will Cowan and Sean Britt each picked up an RBI.
Evan Hoeckele dealt across 3.1 innings of relief, picking up the win after allowing no runs on just one hit, alongside a season-high six strikeouts.
Seton Hall struck in the top of the first. The Pirates worked three walks to load the bases and scored a run off a wild pitch to give the away squad an initial 1-0 edge. Evan Chaffee settled back in, flipping the side with his second strikeout of the inning.
The Red Storm returned the favor with a three-run bottom of the first inning. Tucker opened the frame with a single, stealing second base before Raifstanger was hit by a pitch and Beebe worked a walk to load the bases. McMillan was then issued a free pass, scoring a run in the process, ahead of the Johnnies tacking on two scores off a pair of groundouts to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Pirates added a run in the top of the fourth frame. After juicing the bases from three straight base hits, Seton Hall brought in a score off a fielder's choice, cutting their deficit down to one, 3-2.
Following back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for Hoeckele, the Johnnies threatened with two runners on in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Orbon singled and then stole second, in front of Jeremiah smacking a base knock into right field to put runners on the corners. The Pirates were able to get out of the jam, producing a groundout and a popup to retire the side.
Seton Hall put two runners on in the top of the seventh stanza but couldn't score, as the Johnnies took the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, 3-2.
Game 2: St. John's 5, Seton Hall 4
McMillan led the way for the Johnnies in the second game of the doubleheader, ringing up three hits, including a home run, with two RBIs and a score. Beebe contributed two hits and scored a run of his own against the Pirates. Orbon scored a pair of tallies on a hit and a walk at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Victor Frederick put together a solid outing, only allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with four punchouts across 5.1 innings of action. Louis Marinaro and Jed Boyle closed out the game, only giving up one run across the final 3.2 frames. Boyle earned his team-leading fourth win of the season, pitching the final 0.2 innings of the contest.
Following a quiet first two innings, Seton Hall posted the first run of the game in the top of the third frame. AJ Soldra hit a triple into deep left field and made his way around to score on a Red Storm defensive miscue, giving the Pirates a 1-0 edge.
In the bottom of the fourth stanza, the Johnnies juiced the bases with two outs from three consecutive hit batters. St. John's tacked on a run, coming off a defensive error from the Pirates shortstop to even the game at 1-1.
Beebe opened the home half of the fifth by smacking a single into right-center. McMillan then crushed a 2-0 pitch to straight away dead center field, scoring Beebe in the process and giving the Red Storm a 3-1 advantage.
Seton Hall knotted the game back up in the top of the sixth. Aiden Robbins and Jimmy Brennan both worked walks prior to Kevin Milewski hitting a two-run double into left-center, tying things up, 3-3. Marinaro came on in relief for the Johnnies, neutralizing the threat on second base with a pair of flyouts.
After a scoreless seventh frame, Seton Hall's Robbins started the eighth with a lead-off double, before moving over to third on a groundout. A sacrifice fly plated Robbins, giving the away team a slim 4-3 lead late in the game.
The Johnnies answered right back by tying the game in the bottom half of the eighth. Orbon kicked off the frame by crushing a double into the left field corner and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Orbon went on to score off a Jon LeGrande sacrifice fly, knotting the game back up, 4-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, McMillan sparked a two-out rally after singling up the middle. Grant Russo pinch ran for McMillan stealing second and advancing to third, just ahead of a Cowan free pass. Adam Agresti walked it off for the Red Storm, mashing a 1-0 pitch to center field, scoring Russo to win the game 5-4.
The Red Storm will head to New Rochelle, N.Y., for a midweek matchup against Iona on Tuesday. First pitch from City Park is slated for 3 p.m.
