St. John’s Heads to Iona for Midweek Contest

The Red Storm has won 17 straight games against the Gaels
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 3-0 start to BIG EAST play, the St. John's baseball team will head to New Rochelle for a midweek contest against Iona, on Tuesday at City Park.
First pitch from New Rochelle, N.Y., is slated for 3 p.m. There will be no broadcast for Tuesday's game. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (15-13, 3-0 BIG EAST) enjoyed a BIG EAST opening sweep over Seton Hall (W 13-0, W 3-2, W 5-4), last weekend at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Shaun McMillan's bat was scorching, slashing .636/.615/1.182 with seven hits, a double, a triple, a home run, a team-leading six RBIs and a run scored. Jared Beebe dominated against the Red Storm's longtime conference rival, boasting a .636/.692/.909 slash line on seven hits, three doubles, five runs scored and two RBIs.
The Johnnies led wire-to-wire, shutting out Seton Hall, 13-0, in its BIG EAST opener on Friday. Beebe had himself a day, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a trio of doubles and runs. Jon LeGrande went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, racking up three RBIs, a double and a score, while McMillan batted in three runs on two hits, including a triple.
Pitching shined for St. John's in its league opener, limiting Seton Hall to no runs and only three hits. David Rodriguez picked up his second win of the season, allowing only two hits across 5.2 innings of action.
The Red Storm won the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Pirates, 3-2, in seven innings. Evan Hoeckele dealt across 3.1 innings of relief, picking up the win after allowing no runs on just one hit, with a season-high six strikeouts. Later in the day, Adam Agresti tallied his second walk-off of the year, mashing a 1-0 pitch to center field to give St. John's a 5-4 win. McMillan continued his offensive excellence in the second contest of the day, recording three hits, including a home run, with two RBIs and a score.
As a team, the Johnnies rank second in the BIG EAST and 128th in the nation with a .282 batting average. The team is also second in the league in scoring (6.9 runs per game), slugging percentage (.415) and triples (10). Nationally, the Red Storm is 36th in the country in triples and 93rd in stolen bases.
Jackson Tucker sits 32nd in the nation with 18 stolen bases on the year and is ranked as the 89th toughest to strikeout batter, as of April 7. Beebe is 42nd in NCAA Division I with three triples this season and 79th with 11 doubles, which is tied for second in the league.
St. John's and Iona will square off for the 75th time in the all-time series on Tuesday afternoon. The Johnnies boast a 63-11 all-time advantage over the Gaels and a 20-7 record in New Rochelle. St. John's has won 17 straight games against Iona dating back to 2013. Last year, the squad swept the Gaels, 14-1 and 5-4 at home.
