NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (16-13, 3-0 BIG EAST) shutdown Iona (11-19, 5-7 MAAC), 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon at City Park in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Luke Orbon led the pack, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored against the Gaels. Jace Jeremiah had a 2-for-3 day, registering a double and an RBI at City Park. Jon LeGrande tallied a pair of RBIs, both of which came off a double in the fifth inning. Sean Britt and Jared Beebe each tallied a hit, a score and an RBI on Tuesday.
Jackson Tucker extended his on-base streak to a career-best 24 games, after logging a hit, a walk and a run in New Rochelle.
Kyle Chase had a solid start, going for three shutout innings and limiting Iona to just two hits with a season-high five strikeouts.
The Red Storm threatened to score in the top of the first inning after loading the bases with two outs from a Jared Beebe hit-by-pitch, a Shaun McMillan walk and a Will Cowan infield single. Iona was able to keep St. John's at bay, retiring the frame with a flyout.
The Johnnies put themselves on the board in the away half of the second frame. Orbon kicked off the stanza by doubling down the left field line before Jeremiah brought him in to score by whacking another two-bagger into left, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 edge.
St. John's rang up a seven spot in the fifth inning. Tucker kicked off the top of the frame by smacking an infield single and stealing second base, ahead of a Jayder Raifstanger free pass. Beebe then lined a double down the left field line, scoring Tucker, while Raifstanger came in to score off a wild pitch. McMillan, Cowan and Britt all worked walks, bringing a run home and juicing the bases for Orbon, who singled up the middle to plate two runners. LeGrande capped off the scoring, mashing a one-out two-run double into right-center field to grow the Red Storm's advantage to 8-0.
Iona put itself on the board in the bottom of the fifth. After opening the inning with consecutive base hits, the Gaels scored two runs on a pair of groundouts to cut their deficit down to six, 8-2.
Following Iona loading the bases with a pair of singles and a Red Storm error in the sixth, they tacked on another score after walking in a run to trail by five, 8-3. Chris Batuyios was able to escape the inning with no further damage done, generating a flyout to center field.
The Johnnies' relief pitching trio of Chad Falcon, Jacob Ruiz and Jed Boyle kept the Gaels off the scoreboard in the final three frames, as the Johnnies were able to hold on and take the midweek contest, 8-3.
The Red Storm will return home this weekend for a three-game set against Xavier. The series will kick off on Friday at 3 p.m. from Jack Kaiser Stadium.
