St. John’s Gears Up for the Outdoor BIG EAST Track & Field Championships

The Red Storm finished in fifth place at the league championships last season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team will head to Storrs, Conn., for the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The three-day meet will kick off on Thursday at 11 a.m., with the women's heptathlon 100-meter hurdles and will conclude on Saturday evening. Friday's slate will also begin at 11 a.m., followed by a noon start on Saturday.
All three days of competition will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The Red Storm will look to extend its streak of finishing fifth or better for the 11th consecutive conference championship this weekend.
Last year, the Johnnies finished in fifth place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The program racked up 110.5 total points across 22 events. UConn came in first place with 210.33 points.
Jamora Alves will build on an impressive junior season at the conference championships. The Grenada native currently leads the BIG EAST in the discus (54.33 meters) and is second in the shot put (15.43 meters). Desiree Pagan is fifth in the league in the hammer throw on a mark of 49.80 meters.
Chinenye Onuorah is set to anchor the Red Storm in the 400-meter dash, as she currently sits second in the conference with a time of 54.10 seconds from the South Florida Invitational. Nora Haugen is ready to continue to dazzle in the 800-meter run after posting a season-best finish of 2:04.71 at the USF Alumni Invitational. The sophomore's result placed her second in the BIG EAST in the event.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji, Onuorah and Jalen Jackson will lead the charge for St. John's in the sprint competitions. Lemus-Sodji holds the fourth-best 100-meter dash mark in the league at 11.99 seconds from the UConn Northeast Challenge. Onuorah is second in the conference in the 200-meter dash with a pace of 23.92 seconds, while Jackson ranks third on a finishing time of 24.04 seconds.
Pacing the way for the distance runners in the league championship will be Leyre Campo de Quevedo. The stunning freshman is seventh in the conference in the 10,000-meter run on a time of 36:50.83 from the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships and is 16th in the 1,500-meter run, ringing up a time of 17:01.22 from the USF Alumni Invitational.
Danella Dawkins and Djassi Dean will hold down the fort in the hurdle events. Dawkins checks in at third in the 100-meter hurdles, following a 14.19-second effort from the Tom Farrell Classic. Dean sits fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, putting together a time of 1:01.63 from the Tom Farrell Classic as well.
The tandem of Linn Hertz and Fia Viklund have produced solid outdoor campaigns in the jumps heading into this weekend. Hertz sits in fifth place following a 5.60-meter leap in the long jump at the UConn Northeast Challenge. Viklund set a new personal-best mark of 12.03 meters in the triple jump at UConn to place fifth in the BIG EAST.
Berit Friedenbach, Virginia Lloret and Colette Metcalf are all top 10 in the BIG EAST standings in the pole vault heading into the conference championships. Friedenbach and Lloret are tied for an eighth-place mark of 3.52 meters from the Tom Farrell Classic, while Metcalf sits in 10th with 3.45-meter vault.
