St. John’s to Close Out Regular Season With Three-Game Series at Butler

QUEENS, N.Y. – Coming off a series victory over Villanova, the St. John's baseball team will close out its regular season slate against Butler with a three-game set at Bulldog Park in Indianapolis, Ind., starting on Thursday at 3 p.m.
First pitch for Friday's contest is slated for 2 p.m. while Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday's game will be streamed on FloSports. There will be no broadcast for Friday and Saturday's contests. Live stats for the series will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Last weekend, the Red Storm (27-21, 11-7 BIG EAST) claimed its fourth conference series win of the season against Villanova at Jack Kaiser Stadium, in Queens, N.Y. With their win on Sunday and Seton Hall's loss to Georgetown, the Johnnies earned a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament for the second straight season and for the second time under Head Coach Mike Hampton. The sixth-year skipper is set to make his 18th appearance in the league tournament since his arrival in Queens in 2001, assisting the Red Storm in 16 consecutive postseason berths (2004-19) under former head coach Ed Blankmeyer.
Anthony Brienza and Victor Frederick were both named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after the team's 3-1 week against Stony Brook and Villanova.
Brienza slashed .643/.722/.857 with nine hits, including a double and a triple, five runs scored, three RBIs and four free passes against the Seawolves and Wildcats. On the season, the Johnnies' second baseman has produced a .326/.437/.384 slash line with 28 hits, three doubles, a triple, 10 walks, 18 runs scored and eight RBIs in 27 appearances this season. In BIG EAST play, the graduate student is batting .435 with five RBIs and four scores.
Frederick picked up his fourth win of the season in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Villanova. The righty tossed five innings of no-run ball and only allowed three hits and two walks while tying his season-high of six strikeouts. This season, the Northport, N.Y., native has produced a 5.80 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP in 11 appearances and 49.2 innings pitched. He has logged 41 punchouts to only 18 walks with a 4-2 record.
After stealing four bases against Villanova last weekend, Jackson Tucker, the baseball program's all-time career stolen bases leader, became the first player in Red Storm history to steal 100 bases in a career.
Tucker has also racked up 193 runs in his Red Storm tenure and is one shy of tying second place on the all-time runs list. Additionally, the speedy outfielder is just two away from tying Michael Donadio for first on the all-time scoring leaderboard. Nationally, Tucker checks into the final weekend of the regular season 10th in the nation with 37 stolen bags and is the ranked as the 65th toughest to strikeout batter in NCAA Division I.
St. John's and Butler will battle for the 33rd time in the all-time series when the two teams kick off their three-game set on Thursday. The Johnnies hold a 26-5-1 overall record against the Bulldogs, with a stellar 14-2 record in Indianapolis. Last season, the Red Storm went 2-1 against Butler (W 7-1, W 8-7, L 4-8) in Queens, N.Y. In their last series in Indiana during the 2023 campaign, St. John's swept the Bulldogs (W 24-5, W 7-5, W 14-4).
Butler will take on the Red Storm in Indianapolis with a 14-37 overall record and a 3-15 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs are currently on a 12-game losing streak, most recently dropping their conference series to UConn (L 18-4, L 11-6, L 7-1) at Elliot Ballpark in Storrs, Conn., last weekend.
Jack Moroknek paces the Bulldogs with a .369/.435/.675 slash line, 76 hits, 16 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs, 52 scores, and 51 RBIs. AJ Solomon reaches base at a clip of .459 and leads the team with 37 walks alongside a .316 batting average.
Marcus Goodpaster has made 12 starts in 13 appearances this season with a 7.14 ERA and 39 strikeouts. Ben Whiteside has started five games this season, logging a 5.79 ERA and 17 punchouts in 18.2 innings of work.
Following this weekend's regular-season finale, the Red Storm will head to Mason, Ohio for the BIG EAST Baseball Championship presented by JEEP. The conference tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 21 at Prasco Park.
