Three Johnnies Head to NCAA East Regional

Jamora Alves, Chinenye Onuorah and Nora Haugen will make their second appearance at the NCAA East Regional
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's track & field standouts Jamora Alves, Chinenye Onuorah and Nora Haugen are set to compete against the best in the nation at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla. The University of North Florida will host the event at the Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium.
The Johnnies will begin competition on Thursday at 6 p.m. when Alves takes part in the shot put. The meet will be streamed on ESPN+, while Live Results will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Following impressive junior campaigns for all three athletes, Alves will take part in both the shot put and discus, while Onuorah and Haugen will race in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively.
Alves will compete in the shot put on Thursday at 6 p.m. before she throws in the discus on Saturday at 1 p.m. If she advances in either event, she will punch her ticket to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The Grenada native has put together a stellar season that saw her grab a gold and silver medal in the discus and the shot put at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The thrower posted a 54.30-meter effort for first place in the discus and a 15.24-meter heave in the shot put for second place. At the conclusion of the meet, Alves was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet for the second time in her career.
The BIG EAST Track & Field Most Outstanding Field Performer made the cut in the discus after breaking her own Grenada National Record with a toss of 54.33 meters. She joined the regional list in the shot put after producing a throw of 15.43 meters at the South Florida Invitational.
The junior will make her second career appearance in the discus at the NCAA Regionals and her first in the shot put. Alves will be the first Red Storm thrower since Chanel King in 2012 to compete in the shot put on the national stage.
Onuorah will race in the 400-meter dash preliminary round at 7:25 p.m. on Thursday. If she advances, she will compete in the 400-meter quarterfinal on Saturday at 6:50 p.m.
Onuorah has enjoyed a stellar junior season in Queens, qualifying for her second-straight NCAA regional 400-meter dash appearance. The Thailand native made the cut for the meet after posting a career-best 52.90-second finish for second place in the 400 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. She also notched a gold medal in the 4x400-meter relay with a mark of 3:35.50 at the conference meet.
This season, the sprinter has tallied six podium finishes and has earned career-bests in the 400-meter, 100-meter and 200-meter dash.
Haugen heads to her second-straight NCAA East Regional after qualifying for the 800-meter run with a finishing time of 2:04.44 from the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The junior will begin her quest back to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday at 7:50 p.m. If she advances, she will race in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
The talented athlete from Norway has continued to make waves at St. John's notching nine podium finishes in the 800-meter, 200-meter and 4x400-meter relay this year. She has also tallied five wins across two events during the 2025 outdoor campaign.
The top-12 finishers in each event will punch their ticket into the NCAA Track & Field Championships. The finals will be held in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field from June 11-14.
