The Red Storm honored its seven graduating seniors before the game
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (25-20, 9-6 BIG EAST) took down Stony Brook (22-24, 8-12 CAA), 8-4, on Senior Day on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
Prior to the start of the game, the baseball program honored its seven graduating players: Jace Jeremiah, Jackson Tucker, Luke Orbon, Dylan Johnson, Jared Beebe, Joe Mascio and Sam Mettert, in a pregame Senior Day ceremony to recognize their contributions to the university.
Tucker had a great showing on his senior day, scoring two runs with an RBI and three steals on Tuesday. With his three swipes against the Seawolves, the speedy outfielder became the baseball program's all-time career stolen bases leader, surpassing Ron Naclerio, who has held the record since 1979. The Staten Island, N.Y., native has now racked up 96 career swipes in his four-year tenure in Queens.
Sean Britt led the Johnnies with a pair of hits on the afternoon to go along with a walk. Shaun McMillan contributed a triple, two RBIs and a run at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Jon LeGrande notched a pair of RBIs on one hit and a walk.
Beebe and Jeremiah each logged a pair of walks, a hit and a score, while Will Cowan rang up a hit, a free pass, a tally and an RBI.
Tyler Longoria picked up his fourth win of the season, giving up no runs and only two hits with two strikeouts across three frames of action in his first career start. Brady Clark also contributed three innings of no-run ball in the contest.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Red Storm capitalized on a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the second. Cowan smacked on a single, while Orbon and Anthony Brienza both reached on a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively. LeGrande took advantage of the juiced bases, blasting a single through the left side to score Cowan and Orbon. An RBI groundout from Tucker capped the scoring, giving the Johnnies a 3-0 lead.
The Red Storm loaded the bases again in the bottom of the third frame. With one out, Britt and Orbon both walked ahead of a blooping single from Brienza. The Seawolves were able to flip the side with an inning-ending double play to prevent any more bleeding.
In the home half of the fourth inning, the Red Storm posted another three-spot. Tucker led off the frame by reaching on a Stony Brook error, before stealing second and third base. Beebe then walked in front of McMillan, who crushed a two-run triple to left-center field, plating both Tucker and Beebe. Cowan polished off the frame for the Johnnies with a sacrifice fly, increasing St. John's advantage to 6-0.
The Red Storm tacked on another two runs in the home side of the sixth. Tucker yet again kicked off the frame by reaching first base on a Seawolves miscue as Jeremiah smacked an infield single. Tucker and Jeremiah proceeded to perform a double steal, which was followed by Cowan working a walk to load the bases. Another Stony Brook error scored both Tucker and Jeremiah, pushing the home lead to 8-0.
The Seawolves put themselves on the board in the top of the eighth stanza. After three straight batters walked to load the bases, a pair of singles combined to bring three runs in to score, chopping Stony Brook's deficit down to five, 8-3.
The Seawolves added another run in the away half of the ninth off a wild pitch, but Dylan Johnson was able to find the outs needed to take the game, 8-4.
The Red Storm will return to the diamond on Friday when it kicks off a three-game set against BIG EAST foe Villanova. First pitch from Friday's contest is set for 6 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
