Bluejays caught fire from three to take 81-51 win over Red Storm
OMAHA, Neb. – St. John's women's basketball fell on the road to Creighton, 81-51, on Wednesday Night at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Bluejays shot efficiently from beyond-the-arc at a 44.0% clip (11-25) to record a win at home. The Red Storm outrebounded Creighton, 40-37, during the BIG EAST contest.
Sa'Mya Wyatt paced the Johnnies scoring 14 points and eight boards to lead the team in both categories. Shaulana Wagner chipped in 13 points in 23 minutes of action.
Kylie Lavelle and Daniela Abies each pulled down seven rebounds. Creighton's Ava Zediker led all scorers with 18 points. Neleigh Gessert finished with 17 and five made triples.
St. John's kicked off the contest with five straight points from Wagner, but Creighton quickly found its rhythm from long range, knocking down three of four triples to grab an 11-5 lead just four minutes in. Wyatt answered with a timely jumper, and Wagner buried her second three to pull the Red Storm within three, 13-10, with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. Coming out of a media timeout, Creighton went on a 7-0 run to stretch its advantage to double digits. Brooke Moore completed a three-point play to slow the momentum, but the Bluejays capped the quarter with a layup in the closing seconds to take a 22-13 lead.
Janeya Grant opened the second-quarter scoring for St. John's with a three-pointer, followed by a short jumper from Wagner and a pair of free throws by Wyatt to cut the margin to 26-20. Kendall McGee then caught fire for the Bluejays, drilling two three-pointers in a two-minute span to push the advantage to 16 with two minutes left in the half. Ariel Little and Ava Zediker exchanged buckets in the closing seconds, sending Creighton into the break with the lead.
Creighton opened the second half with a 10–1 run to extend its lead to 51–26. The Bluejays stayed aggressive, continuing to connect from the perimeter and stifling the St. John's offense as the margin grew to as many as 36 points. St. John's went into the final quarter trailing 69–38.
St. John's showed signs of life in the first five minutes of the fourth, led by Grant and Abies, who combined for nine points in the quarter. Creighton pulled away with the 81-51 win over the Johnnies.
The Red Storm will continue its road swing heading to Rhode Island for a Saturday afternoon game against Providence at 1 p.m.
