The Red Storm posts a 4-2 combined mark at Wagner
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams competed in the penultimate meet of the regular season on Staten Island at Wagner on Sunday.
The teams combined for a 4-2 mark on the day against Wagner, North Carolina and Penn. The Red Storm men's squad finished a perfect 3-0 against the field, while the women picked up a 17-10 victory over Wagner.
Across both squads, the Johnnies controlled the strip in foil, racking up a 35-19 record as a program. St. John's totaled 93 wins against its three opponents.
On the men's side, the Red Storm opened the competition with a 21-6 win over Wagner before defeating North Carolina 19-8 and Penn 20-7. Foilist Jan Nowak (9-0), epeeist Samuel Imrek (9-0) and saberist Darii Lukashenko (6-0) each posted perfect records, marking the Johnnies' first unbeaten performances since epeeist Nicole Feygin's 12-0 mark on Nov. 23 at LIU's Shark Tank Challenge. Additional standout performances included saberist Adham Moataz (7-2), foilists Igor Wozniak (7-2) and Sebastian Garcia (5-1) and epeeist Daniil Mazur (5-1).
The women began the day with a strong 17-10 victory over Wagner before falling to North Carolina and Penn in the subsequent rounds. Saberist Catinca Dumitru paced the squad with a 7-2 mark, while foilists Antonina Lachman and Malwina Kolodziejczyk each tallied 6-3 records.
After competing at Wagner, Head Coach Yury Gelman and the Red Storm travel to the City of Brotherly Love for the Temple Invitational on Feb. 22.
