Baseball Drops Series Opener at Arizona State

Tempe, Ariz. – The St. John's baseball team began its weekend with a setback against Arizona State on Friday evening, 9-1.
The Red Storm (1-4) were in a close battle with the Sun Devils (5-0) through six innings, but the home team broke the game open with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.
Lewis Rodriguez produced the Johnnies' lone run of the contest off a 382-foot solo blast to right field. Jack Tate notched his first hit as a Johnnie, going 1-for-3 with a double. Jayder Raifstanger and Ayden Frey each picked up a hit.
In his second outing of the season, Liam O'Leary kept the Red Storm in the game through 5.2 innings. The junior allowed four runs on eight hits while forcing nine flyouts.
Arizona State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run.
Both squads went scoreless over the next two innings, but the Sun Devils struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to pad the lead, 3-0.
In the top of the fifth frame, Rodriguez lifted a two-out solo shot over the right-field fence to put St. John's on the board, 3-1.
ASU tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to retake a three-run lead, 4-1. Tommy Conley came in to relieve O'Leary to close out the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Sun Devils broke the game open with a five-run inning to put the game out of reach, 9-1.
St. John's returns to Phoenix Municipal Stadium tomorrow afternoon for a 3 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. MT first pitch against the Sun Devils.
