St. John’s Falls in Tight Contest at Arizona State, 3-1

TEMPE, Ariz. – The St. John's baseball team fell in a tightly contested battle to Arizona State on Saturday afternoon, 3-1, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Red Storm (1-5) held the Sun Devils (6-0) to just five hits on the afternoon while notching five hits of their own.
Adam Agresti provided the lone run for the visitors, powering a ball over the left-field wall for a solo homer. The redshirt sophomore went 2-for-4 at the dish. Freshman Dylan Fitzsimmons continued a strong start to his collegiate career, going 2-for-4. The Denville, N.J., native has collected hits in four of the five contests this season. Ayden Frey also notched a hit.
Evan Chaffee went 5.0 innings, surrendering three earned runs on five hits while striking out two. Jack Nestler pitched 3.0 innings of no-hit ball in relief.
Arizona State struck first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI triple.
In the top half of the third, Agresti put St. John's on the board with a solo shot to lead off the inning, knotting the score at one apiece. The Sun Devils took back the lead in the bottom
of the third, 2-1.
The last run of the contest came in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Arizona State tacked on an insurance run to make it 3-1.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Shaun McMillan drew a walk in the top of the eighth to bring the tying run to the plate. McMillan was caught trying to steal second base before
Fitzsimmons doubled down the right-field line in an attempt to keep the rally alive but was ultimately left stranded.
St. John's concludes its time in Arizona tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. ET against the Sun Devils at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
