St. John's will carry momentum into the weekend following a strong showing at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships before capping the weekend with a relay victory at the historic Millrose Games.
At the Metropolitan Indoor Championships, the Red Storm finished second overall with 174 team points, highlighted by seven individual titles and one relay win. St. John's had 20 different point scorers across 16 events, with standout performances from Naiara Garcia-Moreno, who won the 1,000-meter run, and Fia Viklund, who claimed the triple jump title. Both student-athletes earned Most Outstanding Performer honors.
During the 118th Millrose Games, St. John's continued its momentum by winning the DKC Collegiate 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Jalen Jackson, Nyla Henderson, Leilani Robinson and Kettia Ambrose clocked a time of 3 minutes, 44.56 seconds to take first place in the collegiate section, marking the third consecutive year the Red Storm has won the event.
On Saturday, a small contingent of student-athletes will compete for the Red Storm across 11 events at the Big Apple Classic.
Senior Cassandra Lemus-Sodji aims to continue a strong indoor campaign in the 60-meter dash and the long jump. Last weekend, the Seattle, Washington, native captured titles in both events at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships and currently sits inside the top five in the BIG EAST in both disciplines.
Also at last weekend's meet, Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong and Jerese Allwood advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, placing fourth and seventh, respectively. The duo returns to the straightaway at Ocean Breeze this weekend.
In the field, a trio of throwers are slated to compete in the weight throw. Juliet Smith registered a fourth-place finish last weekend with a toss of 16.11 meters (52 feet, 10.25 inches). Smith
will be joined by Maja Henry and Desiree Pagan in the event.
Viklund also returns to the runway at Ocean Breeze, where the senior captured the triple jump title last weekend. The Sweden native's leap of 12.45 meters (40 feet, 10.25 inches) came on her final attempt.
St. John's ventures north to Boston for a pair of meets next weekend. On Friday, Feb. 13, the Johnnies head to Harvard for the Harvard Crimson Classic at the Gordon Indoor Track. The following day, the squad remains in Beantown for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at the BU Track and Tennis Center.
