Track and Field Captures Back-to-Back Metropolitan Outdoor Championship Titles

Red Storm collected 207 points in dominant showing
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's track and field team captured its second straight title at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.
The Johnnies totaled 207 points and were the only team to surpass the 100-point mark. The Red Storm recorded 11 event wins and 24 podium finishes, highlighted by Jamora Alves and Ryana Dennis earning Most Valuable Performer honors. The awards complete a sweep of indoor and outdoor MVPs for St. John's, as Fia Viklund and Naiara Garcia-Moreno claimed the honors during the indoor season in February.
Alves dominated the throws, winning both the discus and shot put. She recorded a season-best mark of 51.80 meters (169 feet, 11 inches) in the discus and added a 14.81-meter (48 feet, 7.25 inches) throw in the shot put. Dennis sprinted to titles in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, posting a personal-best 11.95 seconds in the 100 meters and a season-best 24.42 in the 200 meters.
Viklund continued her streak of jumping over 12-meters in all meets this year, using a 12.34m (40 feet, 6 inches) attempt to take the triple jump title. Garcia-Moreno raced to the 1,500-meter run title with an impressive time of 4-minutes, 25.84 seconds, nearly matching her personal-best from the USF Alumni Invitational at 4:25.38.
Chinenye Josephine Onourah claimed the 400-meter dash title with a time of 55.18, as the Johnnies also claimed second and fourth behind times of 55.64 from Nyla Henderson and 58.60 from Blessing Assoumany.
Red Storm ran away with the 800-meter run claiming first through fourth. Leilani Robinson led the way with a time of 2:14.10, followed by Maddie Kelso-Heap finishing in 2:16.52 for second and Attoya Harvey completed the podium sweep in 2:17.71. Sarafina Scavo made her outdoor debut by crossing the line in 2:18.23.
In the hurdles, St. John's took first and second in the 400-meter hurdles and third in the 100-meter hurdles. Ciara Wiltshire and Sophia Leslie claimed the top two spots in the quarter-mile hurdles with times of 1:05.52 and 1:05.73, respectively. While Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong ran to personal-best mark of 14.53 in the 100-hurdles.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji won the long jump with a leap of 5.88m (19 feet, 3.50 inches) and took third in the 200m. Jalen Jackson also finished second in the 200m, with a time of 24.52 to complete the sweep.
Maja Henry and Desiree Pagan contributed to a sweep in the discus, finishing second and third with throws of 40.24 meters (132 feet) and 39.83 meters (130 feet, 8 inches), respectively. Pagan also placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 47.19 meters (154 feet, 10 inches).
Rounding out the individual podiums was Ruth Smith in the high jump, clearing a 1.65m (5 feet, 5 inch) bar for second place.
Closing out the podium finishes were the 4x100-meter relay finished third with a time of 48.97, while the 4x400 meter relay claimed the top spot in a time of 3:44.30.
St. John's is back in action next weekend at the South Florida Invite, hosted by USF at the USF Track and Field Complex.
