Red Storm used a seven-run fifth inning and never looked back against the Hoyas
Red Storm (16-17, 4-0 BIG EAST) used a seven-run fifth inning to put distance on the Hoyas (18-16, 1-3 BIG EAST). The Johnnies used a strong outing from the pitching staff to keep the Hoyas at bay.
Leading the offense was Shaun McMillan, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and a double, three RBIs and two runs. Jayder Raifstagner registered his 10th multi-hit outing of the season and Adam Agresti launched a 407-foot two-run blast in the third for his 13th home run of the season. Ayden Frey notched a pair of hits and three RBIs, as five other Johnnies recorded a hit.
On the mound, Liam O'Leary picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings while allowing just three runs and striking out three. A combined relief effort from Jack Nestler and Victor Frederick sealed the deal for the Red Storm.
Georgetown threatened in the top of the first inning with bases loaded and two outs, but O'Leary was able to work out of the jam unscathed.
St. John's cracked the game open with a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. Raifstanger used a one-out double to start the rally and would come around to score on McMillan's first RBI of the day. Agresti uncorked a two-run shot to deep left field to make it 3-0.
Red Storm would hang up seven runs in the fifth frame. With the bases juiced, plated two on a walk and a wild pitch. After loading the bases with two outs, Jon LeGrande was hit by a pitch to bring home another run. Raifstanger followed up with a single to drive in a pair and put runners on the corners. McMillan added another pair of insurance runs with a double to deep left center to make it 10-0.
The Hoyas responded in the top of the sixth inning with three runs and cut into the deficit again in the top of the eighth to make it 10-6.
In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Frey pushed the advantage with a two out RBI single, 12-6.
Frederick came in to seal the deal for the Red Storm on a strike out in a 12-6 final.
St. John's is back at Jack Kaiser stadium tomorrow for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
