Red Storm used a combined effort from Evan Chaffee and Evan Hoeckele to shutout the Hoyas
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 11, 2026) – The St. John's baseball team picked up its first shutout victory of the season, blanking Georgetown, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Red Storm (17-17, 5-0 BIG EAST) pitching staff used a combined shutout behind Evan Chaffee and Evan Hoeckele to clinch the series victory over the Hoyas (18-17, 1-4).
Five Johnnies registered multi-hit contests, led by Adam Agresti with a perfect 2-for-2 day with a pair of doubles and three walks. Cristian Bernardini tied a career-high with three hits going 3-for-4. Will Cowan, Lewis Rodriguez and Shaun McMillan all notched at least two hits each.
Chaffee was effective through 6.0 innings of work, giving up just five hits while striking out eight. Hoeckele followed with a perfect 3.0 innings of relief to close out the contest.
Georgetown threatened in the top of the second frame with the bases juiced, but Chaffee thwarted the momentum with a dramatic strike out.
St. John's opened the scoring in the bottom of the third by capitalizing on a miscue from the Hoyas, allowing Rodriguez to score. Cowan used an RBI single to left to bring around McMillan, 2-0.
Red Storm put up another pair of tallies in the bottom of the fourth frame. Bernardini blooped a single to center and came around to score after Rob Mansour reached on an error. With runners on the corners, Jon LeGrande drove Mansour home on a fielder's choice to make it 4-0.
In the bottom of seventh inning with runners on first and second, Cowan launched a ball off the wall in deep right field for a triple to push the advantage to 6-0.
St. John's continued to apply pressure in the bottom of the eighth frame. After Bernardini singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, Mansour laced a single to left field to score Bernardini. With two outs, Jayder Raifstanger singled to put runners on the corners. McMillan followed with an RBI single to left, allowing Mansour to score and Raifstanger to make his way to second. Agresti powered a doubled off the left field wall to bring around McMillan for the final tally of the afternoon, 9-0.
The Johnnies will aim for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Hoyas. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
