The Red Storm ride a five-game win streak against the Hoyas
QUEENS, N.Y. – Winners of five straight, the St. John's baseball team will host Georgetown for its BIG EAST home opening series in a three three-game set at Jack Kaiser Stadium this weekend.
Game one on Friday is set for 3 p.m., featuring a Pit Viper Sunglasses giveaway and free ice cream for all students and student-athletes for National Student-Athlete Day. Saturday's contest will begin at 2 p.m. and the series finale will start at 1 p.m. in Queens. All three games will be available to watch on ESPN+ and live stats can be found on redstormsports.com.
St. John's (15-17, 3-0 BIG EAST) rolled to a 9-1 road win over Central Connecticut State on Tuesday, powered by a breakout performance from freshman Dylan Fitzsimmons, who went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs.
Shaun McMillan added a 2-for-4 effort with a triple, two runs and an RBI, while Jayder Raifstanger doubled and scored, Adam Agresti crossed the plate three times and Lewis Rodriguez stole two bases.
The Red Storm struck early and pulled away with four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, while Thomas Harding earned the win with 3.0 innings of one-run ball and five strikeouts. The bullpen quartet of Brady Clark, Nick Gilpin, Tommy Conley and Kyle Chase combined for 7.0 scoreless innings to seal St. John's fifth straight victory.
Agresti was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after a dominant four-game stretch, shlashed .421/.500/.947 with eight hits, a double, three home runs, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Liam O'Leary also earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after tossing a complete game on April 2 against Seton Hall, striking out eight and allowing just two runs in an 8-2 victory. The pair is also the first battery mates to claim a player of the week and an honor roll spot since Ben Adams and Jimmy Keenan did so on Feb. 19, 2024.
Following last weekend's series sweep of Seton Hall, St. John's moved into a tie with Butler atop the BIG EAST standings. The Red Storm have been sharp defensively, leading the conference with a .976 fielding percentage. The Johnnie pitching staff has impressed with a 1.55 WHIP, a 5.71 ERA and just 8.95 hits allowed per nine innings, with the latter among the league's best marks.
Individually, O'Leary has been a steady presence in the rotation, posting a 2.79 ERA over eight starts, good for second in the conference and inside the top 100 in the country, while also throwing the BIG EAST's lone complete game. Agresti ranks second in the league with 12 home runs and 28th nationally. Fitzsimmons is tied for second with two triples.
St. John's and Georgetown (18-15, 1-2 BIG EAST) will face off for the 99th time with the series dating back to 1984. The Red Storm hold an 74-24 edge in the all-time series and a 33-9 advantage in Queens. Georgetown most recently outslugged Maryland Eastern Shore, 13-9, on Tuesday night at Capital One Park to improve to 18-15 on the season. After dropping its BIG EAST opening series to Xavier, 2-1, Georgetown sits fifth in the conference standings. The Hoyas have shown strong plate discipline, leading the league with 195 walks, good for 18th nationally, and posting a .409 on-base percentage, which ranks 54th in the country.
Offensively, they also lead the BIG EAST in several categories, while ranking among the nation's best in triples (8), runs scored (230) and stolen bases (65). On the mound, Georgetown has been equally as effective, pacing the conference with a 1.43 WHIP and 8.72 hits allowed per nine innings, while ranking second with a 5.13 ERA.
Individually, Connor Peek has been one of the toughest hitters to strike out in the conference and leads the BIG EAST with 37 runs, 48 hits and a .381batting average, while also ranking second in stolen bases with15.
