St. John’s has won 11 of its last 13 games
Red Storm (21-19, 7-2 BIG EAST) faced a deficit early but used a three-run fourth inning to take the lead. The Scarlet Knights (20-20, 7-11 Big 10) came back to knot the contest in the seventh, but St. John's was able to plate three runs in the eighth to reclaim the advantage and hold on the rest of the way for the first victory over a Big 10 opponent this season.
The trio of Lewis Rodriguez, Shaun McMillan and Cristian Bernardini led the way offensively, each collecting two hits and a pair of RBIs. Ayden Frey recorded a hit and an RBI, as three other Johnnies registered a hit. Sean Britt walked twice and scored two runs.
After Nick Gilpin went 2.0 innings to start, the St. John's bullpen stepped up with seven relievers finishing the contest by allowing just one run on two hits. The trio of Thomas Harding, Nick Romer and Kyle Chase allowed no hits in their 1.0 innings of work apiece.
Rutgers put up two runs in the bottom of the first, but St. John's responded in the top of the second with a Frey RBI single to score Dylan Fitzsimmons, 2-1.
The Scarlet Knights added another two runs in the second, but the Johnnies once again answered with a run on a McMillan single, bringing home Bernardini to make it 4-2.
In the top of the fourth, St. John's took the lead with a three-run rally. Following a series of Rutgers defensive miscues that allowed Frey to score, Rodriguez cleared the bases with a triple to right field and gave the Red Storm a 5-4 lead.
Rutgers tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh frame, but Tyler Longoria was able to limit any further damage, 5-5.
The Johnnies regained the lead in the eighth, putting up a three spot. With one out and runners at second and third, Bernardini reached on a fielder's choice to score Sean Britt. The next batter, Jayder Raifstanger laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Rob Mansour. With Bernardini at third, McMillan plated the third run of the rally to make it 8-5.
Red Storm scored another pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning off a Mansour fielder's choice and a Bernardini RBI single.
St. John's remains on the road for a three-game weekend series at Xavier. First pitch from Cincinnati, Ohio is set for 3 p.m. on Friday.
