Three Johnnies go yard to seal the series victory over the Bluejays and the top spot in the BIG EAST standings
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (26-20, 11-3 BIG EAST) powered past Creighton (25-19, 10-4 BIG EAST), 11-3, using its second five-run inning of the three-game set to secure the series victory.
Jon LeGrande paced the offense with a standout 3-for-4 performance, launching a three-run homer and a double while driving in four runs, scoring three times and drawing a walk. Adam Agresti and Dylan Fitzsimmons also went deep, while Jayder Raifstanger added a run scored and three RBIs in the win.
On the mound, Evan Chaffee delivered a strong start, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings while striking out six. Jack Nestler shut the door with 3.2 scoreless innings in relief, fanning four to earn his second career win.
After two scoreless frames, the Johnnies broke through in the third, capitalizing on a bases-loaded opportunity with a run scoring on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead.
Creighton threatened in the fourth with a two-out triple from Nate McHugh, but St. John's escaped the inning unscathed. The Red Storm added to its lead in the bottom half, juicing the bases again before Raifstanger singled through the left side to bring home Fitzsimmons for a 2-0 edge.
The Bluejays answered in the sixth, pushing across three runs on a pair of RBI singles to take a 3-2 lead. St. John's busted the game open with a decisive five-run inning. Rob Mansour ignited the rally with a double, and Cristian Bernardini followed with a single to put runners on the corners. LeGrande tied the game with an RBI double to right-center, and
Raifstanger gave the Johnnies the lead with a two-run single. Agresti capped the surge with a 383-foot, two-run homer, his 17th of the season, to make it 7-3.
Fitzsimmons extended the advantage in the seventh with a 418-foot solo blast, his second home run in the last three contests. LeGrande later added the exclamation point, crushing a 400-foot, two-run bomb to stretch the lead to 11-3.
St. John's held firm over the final two innings to seal the 11-3 victory and claim the series over the Bluejays. With the win, the Red Storm move into sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST standings.
The Red Storm will close out the weekend series against Creighton on Sunday at Jack Kaiser Stadium with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
