RIVERDALE, N.Y. -
Running in its first championship race of the season, the St. John's cross country team improved four places from last season's eighth place finish at the Metropolitan Championships to place fourth out of 14 teams with 100 points at Friday's 5K race.
Columbia won the event with 68 points, while Rutgers and Iona finished second and third with scores of 74 and 83, respectively.
Senior captain Tyneka Greene led the way for the Red Storm with a career-best, eighth-place time of 19:09. Her finish was the fastest 5K time the team has run in the past two seasons.
"We're very pleased with the fourth place finish," said head coach Jim Hurt. "The team ran very well, especially for the first time running at Van Cortlandt Park this year. Finishing four spots ahead of last year really showed that the future of our program is really on the way up. It was a great way for Greene to finish in her last Metropolitan Championships. I'm really looking forward to going back to Van Cortlandt for the BIG EAST meet on Oct. 31."
Freshman Sabine Schneider also marked her season-best 5K time of 19:10, good for a 10th place finish, her second top-10 time this year.
The underclassmen duo of Aryon Trujillo and Sarah Sudbury also finished in the top 20 of the 125-person race. Trujillo finished 15th with a season-best time of 19:40, while Sudbury came in 20th with a time of 19:58.
Finishing up scoring for the Red Storm was freshman Nicole Cocozza, who crossed the tape at 20:48 in 47th place.
Also running for the Red Storm were juniors Sarah Fry and Pamela Petruski, who clocked in at 21:01 and 21:05, respectively. Sophomores Lori Dougherty finished at 21:12, while fellow classmate Kayla Regulski came in seven second later at 21:19. Katrina Schaefer crossed the tape at 22:41.
Next up, St. John's will host its annual Fall Festival at Cunningham Park on Sunday, Oct. 19. The race will be preceded by a Fun Run/Walk to benefit the fight against breast cancer beginning at 9:30 a.m. The women's 4K is set to begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 5K at 10:30 a.m.
An alumni reception will follow the races starting at noon in Council Hall on the St. John's campus. For more information on the alumni event contact Mary Pat Beirne at 718-990-1873.
